Ciprofloxacin carrier systems based on hectorite/halloysite hybrid hydrogels for potential wound healing applications

Marina Massaro et al.

Summary: The study reported the development of ciprofloxacin carrier systems based on hectorite/halloysite hybrid hydrogels for potential wound healing applications. The introduction of modified Hal as a filler in hectorite hydrogel improved the rheological properties and controlled the release process of ciprofloxacin. The in vitro biocompatibility of the Hal fillers was evaluated through cytotoxic assays and laser scanning confocal microscopy.

Boosting the properties of a fluorescent dye by encapsulation into halloysite nanotubes

Serena Riela et al.

Summary: A new biocompatible bichmmophoric system (CURBO) was developed by connecting the skeleton of curcumin to a BODIPY derivative, which showed intense fluorescence and red-shifted emission spectra in organic solvent and aqueous solution, respectively. Loading the system into halloysite nanotubes (HNT) improved its solubility and resulted in increased emission intensity in the red region. The HNT/CURBO nanocomposite exhibited high cell uptake and dual-channel emissions, making it suitable for minimizing autofluorescence detection and interesting microscopy applications.

Fluorescent gold nanoclusters stabilized on halloysite nanotubes: in vitro study on cytotoxicity

Maksim Gorbachevskii et al.

Summary: Fluorescent gold nanoclusters (AuNCs) stabilized with 11-mercaptoundecanoic acid and supported on halloysite nanotubes modified with aminosilane showed good uptake by A549 human cells. At concentrations of 25-50 μg/mL, the material did not have a pronounced toxic effect but led to massive cell death via apoptosis at 100 μg/mL. This concentration-dependent toxicity mechanism allows for potential applications in bioimaging and cancer therapy.
