Explainable AI to improve acceptance of convolutional neural networks for automatic classification of dopamine transporter SPECT in the diagnosis of clinically uncertain parkinsonian syndromes

Mahmood Nazari et al.

Summary: This study tested layer-wise relevance propagation (LRP) to explain the CNN-based classification of dopamine transporter (DAT) SPECT images in patients with clinically uncertain parkinsonian syndromes. The results showed that LRP provided relevant maps that were easy to interpret and highlighted the key brain regions for CNN-based classification. Overall, LRP is recommended to support CNN-based classification of DAT-SPECT in clinical routine, with a total computation time of 3 seconds which is compatible with busy clinical workflow. The utility of inconsistent relevance maps to identify misclassified cases requires further investigation.

Explaining decisions of graph convolutional neural networks: patient-specific molecular subnetworks responsible for metastasis prediction in breast cancer

Hryhorii Chereda et al.

Summary: Research has shown that by applying the Layer-wise Relevance Propagation (LRP) technique to Graph-CNN, decisions made by deep learning methods can be explained, such as in the application on a breast cancer dataset. The use of Graph Layer-wise Relevance Propagation (GLRP) method provides patient-specific molecular subnetworks that largely agree with clinical knowledge, identifying common and novel potentially druggable drivers of tumor progression.

Summary: The study compared the long-term survival of dental implants in patients with and without a history of implant failure. The results showed that the survival rate was lower in the experimental group compared to the control group, and the location of the implants had an impact on the survival rate, with lower failure risk for mandibular implants.

Summary: This study demonstrated the use of digital pathology and deep learning for accurate diagnosis of common subtypes of STS and prediction of disease-specific survival status in LMS. The deep learning model significantly improved pathologists' accuracy in diagnosis and provided a faster and more certain diagnosis process. The DL model was shown to be a significant independent prognostic factor in predicting STS prognosis, outperforming other risk factors.

Summary: This study used multi-task deep learning to classify dental implant brands and treatment stages, evaluating five deep convolutional neural network models and finding better performance with deeper networks and more parameters. Multi-task learning significantly improved brand classification and overall accuracy in treatment phase classification.
