Real-World Impact of the Accelerate PhenoTest BC Kit on Patients With Bloodstream Infections in the Improving Outcomes and Antimicrobial Stewardship Study: A Quasiexperimental Multicenter Study

Amira A. Bhalodi et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that using the Accelerate PhenoTest BC Kit (AXDX) for testing patients with bloodstream infections leads to significant reductions in time to optimal therapy, first antimicrobial modification, and time to antimicrobial deescalation.

Clinical Impact of Accelerate Pheno Rapid Blood Culture Detection System in Bacteremic Patients

Ryan K. Dare et al.

Summary: The implementation of AXDX significantly improved patient outcomes, including reduced length of stay, increased frequency of achieving optimal therapy, faster time to optimal therapy, and shorter total days of antimicrobial therapy. The results indicate that AXDX can be integrated into healthcare systems with an active antimicrobial stewardship program without the need for real-time notification.

Implementation of a Rapid Phenotypic Susceptibility Platform for Gram-Negative Bloodstream Infections With Paired Antimicrobial Stewardship Intervention: Is the Juice Worth the Squeeze?

Evan D. Robinson et al.

Summary: This study found that implementation of a phenotypic RDT + ASP intervention can reduce the time to antimicrobial susceptibility testing and institutional-preferred antimicrobial therapy for patients with Gram-negative bacilli bloodstream infections. It also showed a decrease in the use of broad-spectrum agents and an increase in narrow-spectrum beta-lactams. Although discrepant RDT results occurred, there were no differences in clinical outcomes observed.

Impact of an Antimicrobial Stewardship Program-bundled initiative utilizing Accelerate Pheno™ system in the management of patients with aerobic Gram-negative bacilli bacteremia

Thomas L. Walsh et al.

Summary: A study was conducted to compare the management of non-critically ill patients with GNB BSI before and after the implementation of a bundled initiative. The initiative included clinical decision algorithm dissemination, ACC testing on all GNB isolated from blood cultures, real-time communication of results to ASP, and prospective audit with feedback by ASP. The implementation led to improvements in time from Gram stain to AST, time to definitive therapy, total duration of antibiotic therapy, and hospital length of stay without increasing readmission rates.

Impact of Accelerate Pheno and BacT/Alert Virtuo on Clinical Processes and Outcomes in Patients with Sepsis and Concurrent Gram-Negative Bacteremia

Faith Babowicz et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the impact of Accelerate Pheno and BacT/Alert Virtuo systems on outcomes in patients with sepsis and concurrent Gram-negative bacteremia. Post-implementation, there were significantly shorter times for Gram stain and susceptibility results, improvements in narrow-spectrum Gram-negative therapy initiation at 72 hours, 30-day inpatient mortality, and sepsis resolution. Overall, the implementation of these systems improved microbiology laboratory processes, antibiotic utilization processes, and clinical outcomes, supporting the use of rapid diagnostics in sepsis with Gram-negative bacteremia.
