False individual patient data and zombie randomised controlled trials submitted toAnaesthesia

J. B. Carlisle

Summary: The author analyzed the baseline summary data of randomized controlled trials submitted to Anaesthesia from 2017 to 2020, identifying 14% of trials containing false data and categorizing 8% as 'zombie'. The analysis showed that individual patient data increased detection of false data and categorization of trials as 'zombie'. China, South Korea, India, Japan, and Egypt were the top five countries submitting trials, with China having the highest proportion.

The thin ret(raction) line: biomedical journal responses to incorrect non-targeting nucleotide sequence reagents in human gene knockdown publications

Jennifer A. Byrne et al.

Summary: This study compared journal responses to a specific reagent error in 31 human gene knockdown publications, revealing variations in responses between journals and suggesting a need for editorial staff to have more support in interpreting post-publication notifications of incorrect nucleotide sequences. A draft template was proposed to facilitate communication, interpretation, and investigation of published errors, including those affecting research reagents.

Trust in science, social consensus and vaccine confidence

Patrick Sturgis et al.

Summary: Trust in science is crucial for vaccine confidence, both at the individual and country level. Countries with a high level of societal trust in science are more likely to have confident populations in regards to vaccines. Additionally, societal consensus around trust in science moderates the relationship between scientific trust and vaccine confidence, with stronger correlations in countries with higher levels of social consensus.

Methods to assess research misconduct in health-related research: A scoping review

Esmee M. Bordewijk et al.

Summary: This study provides an overview of methods to investigate research misconduct in health-related research. While measures against textual plagiarism are well implemented, tools for other forms of research misconduct are lacking standardization and formal validation, calling for further development of automatic tools and routine validation of these methods.

Meta-epidemiological study of publication integrity, and quality of conduct and reporting of randomized trials included in a systematic review of low back pain

J. A. Hayden et al.

Summary: The study compared trials published by predatory and non-predatory publishers, finding that trials published by predatory publishers consistently had inferior conduct, reporting, and publication integrity characteristics. Trials published by predatory publishers were associated with missing conflict of interest statements, inadequate follow-up durations, incomplete study methods and baseline reporting, and a high risk of bias. More work is needed to understand the potential impact of trials published in predatory publications on evidence from systematic reviews.

Assessing Research Misconduct in Randomized Controlled Trials

Wentao Li et al.

Summary: Randomized controlled trials are crucial in evidence-based medicine, but compromised data integrity and research misconduct pose risks to patients and undermine the authority of this scientific tool. There is a need for better methods to detect and prevent research misconduct, as well as improved mechanisms for investigating data manipulation and prioritizing patient and reader interests over trial authors and institutions.
