Vegan Diet and Bone Health-Results from the Cross-Sectional RBVD Study

Juliane Menzel et al.

Summary: Scientific evidence suggests that a vegan diet may be associated with impaired bone health. A cross-sectional study comparing vegans and omnivores found lower calcaneal quantitative ultrasound measurements in vegans, as well as differences in nutrition- and bone-related biomarker concentrations. Certain biomarkers were identified to contribute most to bone health, with all QUS parameters increasing across the tertiles of the pattern score. Further studies are needed to confirm these findings.

Dietary patterns and hip fracture in the Adventist Health Study 2: combined vitamin D and calcium supplementation mitigate increased hip fracture risk among vegans

Donna L. Thorpe et al.

Summary: A study found that female vegans have a 55% higher risk of hip fractures compared to non-vegetarians, while this association was not present in men. However, female vegans who supplemented with both vitamin D and calcium did not have a higher risk of hip fractures.

Effects of exercise frequency and training volume on bone changes following a multi-component exercise intervention in middle aged and older men: Secondary analysis of an 18-month randomized controlled trial

Robin M. Daly et al.

Summary: This study found that exercise frequency and training volume were positively associated with changes in hip and spine bone mineral density over 18 months. Men who completed 1 to 2 sessions per week had a greater increase in hip BMD, while those completing more than 2 sessions per week had a higher increase in spine trabecular BMD compared to non-exercising men. Additionally, the number of impact loads per session was more important than the weight lifted in predicting positive skeletal responses in middle-aged and older men.

Comparison of human bone mineral densities in subjects on plant-based and omnivorous diets: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Tao Li et al.

Summary: A systematic review and meta-analysis of 17 cross-sectional studies revealed that individuals on plant-based diets have lower bone mineral density at the lumbar spine, femoral neck, and whole-body compared to omnivores. Both vegetarians and vegans also exhibited lower BMDs than omnivores.
