Facile extraction and characterization of cellulose nanocrystals from agricultural waste sugarcane straw

Summary: The study focused on utilizing sugarcane straw to obtain pure cellulose and subsequently prepare CNCs with desirable properties. Alkali-treated fibers showed high cellulose content and smooth fibrous structure, while CNCs isolated through sulfuric acid hydrolysis had specific dimensions and improved anionic charge after short-term ultrasonication. Overall, the results suggest the potential for utilizing sugarcane straw in CNCs preparation and possible applications.

Genetic modification for enhancing bacterial cellulose production and its applications

Summary: Bacterial cellulose (BC) is in high demand due to its purity and nano size, with Komagataeibacter xylinum being a model organism studied for its high cellulose production capacity. The production mechanism of BC involves a series of sequential reactions with enzymes, understanding this mechanism can help improve yield and control properties, with genetic modification being a tool to achieve desired changes. Studies on genetic modification for BC production have been limited by lack of information on whole genome and genetic toolkits, but there is an increasing number of studies in recent years due to whole genome sequencing of Komagataeibacter strains. This review article presents mechanisms and targets for genetic modifications to achieve desired changes in BC production quantity and characteristics.
