Pathways towards sustainable concrete

D. Coffetti et al.

Summary: This paper discusses various alternative strategies to improve the sustainability of concrete, including applying the latest technologies to manufacture traditional Portland cement, substituting traditional constituents with alternative binders, using recycled aggregates and non-drinking water, and developing high-durability/high-performance mixtures. The paper also highlights the importance of upgrading existing standards and educating designers, researchers, and contractors to promote the development and diffusion of new concrete technologies. It proposes a new sustainability index for mortars and concretes manufactured with negative carbon footprint materials.

Effect of Na2O concentration and water/binder ratio on carbonation of alkali-activated slag/fly ash cements

Jian Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of Na2O concentration and water/binder ratio on the carbonation process of alkali-activated slag/fly ash cements. Higher Na2O concentration and lower water/binder ratio can slow down the formation rate of calcium carbonates, enhancing the activation degree of slag in the cementitious system.

Effect of direct carbonation routes of basic oxygen furnace slag (BOFS) on strength and hydration of blended cement paste

Mengting Ma et al.

Summary: A study was conducted to determine the optimal conditions for aqueous carbonation of basic oxygen furnace slag (BOFS) in order to maximize CO2 sequestration. The carbonated BOFS was found to have a higher sequestration rate compared to dry carbonation, and when used in blended cement paste, it accelerated the early heat evolution but decreased mechanical strength as the replacement ratio increased. Aqueous carbonation was also found to be more effective in enhancing the properties of blended cement paste due to the presence of nucleation sites.

Summary: Converter steel slag, a by-product of the steel-making process, shows high reactivity in a CO2 rich environment. This study demonstrates that modified converter steel slag after CO2 pretreatment can be used as a supplementary cementitious material in eco-friendly ultra-high performance concrete, achieving higher compressive strength and improving microstructure. The carbonation process modifies the physical and chemical properties of slag particles, enhancing cement hydration and reducing leaching of potentially hazardous elements in UHPC mixtures.

On the optimization of BOF slag hydration kinetics

A. M. Kaja et al.

Summary: This study investigates the early age hydration kinetics of BOF slag using isothermal calorimetry and in-situ X-ray diffraction. The most reactive slag phase during hydration is identified as brownmillerite, with crystalline siliceous hydrogarnet being a key hydration product. The addition of K3-citrate and nanosilica have significant impacts on the slag reactivity, with highly concentrated K3-citrate accelerating brownmillerite hydration and nanosilica slightly delaying it.
