Use of hydrogen in public transport systems

Dariusz Pyza et al.

Summary: The development of urban agglomerations and changes in lifestyle have increased transport needs and led to negative environmental effects. This article focuses on the use of hydrogen as an alternative fuel in public transport systems, providing analysis on hydrogen extraction, different approaches of electricity extraction for hydrogen production, cost evaluation, and impact on vehicle operating costs. The findings suggest that using hydrogen produced from renewable sources as an alternative fuel is a rational choice for low-emission public transport.

The techno-economics potential of hydrogen interconnectors for electrical energy transmission and storage

Max Patel et al.

Summary: This research introduces a novel method called "Hydrogen Interconnector System" (HIS) for long-distance electrical energy transportation. It converts stranded renewable energy into hydrogen and transports it via pipelines to the demand center, where it is reconverted to electricity. The study shows that the HIS is competitive with High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) systems in terms of economic and technological indicators, and it also has lower investment costs in certain scenarios.

Flexible hydrogen production source for fuel cell vehicle to reduce emission pollution and costs under the multi-objective optimization framework

Ling Zhou et al.

Summary: This paper presents a multi-objective approach to operating FCVs in a hybrid power-gas-hydrogen system to reduce operating costs and pollution emissions. By coupling power-to-gas (P2G) technology with FCVs, excess electrical energy can be converted into hydrogen and natural gas efficiently, contributing to carbon capture as well. The results show a reduction of 8.04% and 9.8% in cost and emission pollution, respectively, under the comprehensive operation approach of FCV and P2G technology.

The role of hydrogen in decarbonizing a coupled energy system

Yimin Zhang et al.

Summary: This paper examines the decarbonization of three coupled energy sectors: electricity, transport, and heating/industry. The study explores the feasibility of reducing total greenhouse gas emissions to zero by incorporating hydrogen production, hydrogen fuel substitution, and electrification. The research suggests that technological learning and energy efficiency measures can significantly reduce costs and land use. Furthermore, hydrogen-fueled reciprocating engines and hydrogen gas storage are found to offer more cost-effective long-term electricity storage compared to batteries and pumped hydropower.

Analyzing the levelized cost of hydrogen in refueling stations with on-site hydrogen production via water electrolysis in the Italian scenario

M. Minutillo et al.

Summary: The study focused on the techno-economic assessment of on-site hydrogen refueling stations using PV plants integrated with electrolysis units in the Italian scenario. It found that the levelized cost of hydrogen (LCOH) is influenced by investment costs, operational and maintenance costs, and electricity prices. The results showed that the LCOH values increase proportionally with changes in electricity mix and hydrogen production capacity.

Green hydrogen for heating and its impact on the power system

Genaro Longoria et al.

Summary: Hydrogen is gaining attention as a fuel for residential heating due to its relatively high energy density, but its production depends on the power system, potentially impacting electricity prices and renewable generation curtailment. Introducing electrolysers may increase emissions from power generation and slightly raise electricity prices, with optimal locations determined by residential heating demand and surplus power supplies at electricity nodes.
