Ecological sustainability and its driving factor of urban agglomerations in the Yangtze River Economic Belt based on three-dimensional ecological footprint analysis

Yiyang Yang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the ecological sustainability of urban agglomerations in the Yangtze River Economic Belt using a three-dimensional ecological footprint model and proposes ecological compensation methods. Findings show that the YREB is generally in an ecologically unsustainable state, mainly due to rapid economic development and improvements in living standards.

Ecological consequences of China's regional development strategy: evidence from water ecological footprint in Yangtze River Economic Belt

Changsheng Jin et al.

Summary: The study evaluates the allocation and management of water resources in China's Yangtze River Economic Belt and examines the impact of regional policies on water ecological footprints. The findings suggest that there is variation in per capita water ecological footprints and carrying capacities, and the policies have a negative impact on local water ecological footprints.

Modelling the coupling evolution of the water environment and social economic system using PSO-SVM in the Yangtze River Economic Belt, China

Chenning Deng et al.

Summary: This study analyzes the spatiotemporal dynamics of the coupling evolution between water environment and social economy in the Yangtze River Economic Belt using theoretical models. Findings show a decreasing trend in coupling coordination from east to west spatially, while showing an increasing trend over time. The optimal scenario identified was green development, leading to improved overall coordination. Proposed policy recommendations aim to support coordinated and sustainable development in the region.

Water footprint: applying the water footprint assessment method to Australian agriculture

Iqbal Hossain et al.

Summary: Water footprint assessment is essential for evaluating water scarcity along the supply chain. This study in Australia found that almonds have the highest water footprint and tomatoes have the lowest. The total water footprint for Australian crops is higher than the international average, except for a few crops like potatoes, tomatoes, and almonds. Recommendations for future sustainable cropping patterns suggest continuing to grow certain crops like tomatoes, carrots/turnips, potatoes, and apples, while discontinuing the cultivation of high water footprint crops, such as almonds.

Decoupling water environment pressures from economic growth in the Yangtze River Economic Belt, China

Yuying Zhang et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the decoupling performance and driving factors of economic output and water environment pressure in provinces and cities of the Yangtze River Economic Belt from 2004 to 2018. The overall trend showed positive decoupling, but the upper reaches of the Yangtze River demonstrated unstable decoupling and tended to deteriorate.

Income impacts on household consumption's grey water footprint in China

Xiawei Liao et al.

Summary: Urbanization in China has led to significant changes in household consumption patterns, resulting in a notable increase in greywater footprint for urban households while a slight decrease for rural households. The study also highlights the significant impact of total Nitrogen on GWF and how food consumption dominates GWF for household consumption. Meanwhile, the study shows that urban households on average require higher GWF for consumption compared to rural households, with variations depending on income levels.

Decoupling economic growth from water consumption in the Yangtze River Economic Belt, China

Yang Kong et al.

Summary: The study measured water consumption in provincial areas in the Yangtze River Economic Belt and conducted a decoupling analysis, finding an overall increase in water footprint in most provinces, but differing levels of decoupling achieved, with the development of water-saving technologies identified as a key path to achieving decoupling.

Analysis of water?carbon?ecological footprints and resource?environment pressure in the Triangle of Central China

Yizhong Chen et al.

Summary: The current evaluation of resource environment pressure mostly relies on the multi-index comprehensive evaluation method, which is subjective and may lack comparability. This study proposes a footprint family indicator system to quantitatively assess spatial-temporal variations in REP, and applies it to the Triangle of Central China region.

Mapping multiple water pollutants across China using the grey water footprint

Haoyuan Feng et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the spatial and temporal changes of grey water footprint and surface water pollution level in China from 2003 to 2018. The results showed a decrease in GWF and WPL, driven by water efficiency and technological and industrial structural effects. The research provides important insights and policy suggestions for reducing GWF and improving water quality in China.
