Perspective on the hydrogen economy as a pathway to reach net-zero CO2 emissions in Europe

Mijndert van der Spek et al.

Summary: The role of hydrogen in the energy transition has evolved over the years, and the current focus is on its versatility in aiding the transition to CO2 neutrality. However, strong political support and robust infrastructure design are necessary for the realization of the hydrogen economy. Multiple barriers need to be addressed, including technology development, infrastructure co-creation, policy, market design, and business model development. This article provides a comprehensive understanding of the elements in the hydrogen economy, its current state, and the gaps that need to be filled.

Interaction between electrified steel production and the north European electricity system

Alla Toktarova et al.

Summary: This study investigates the interactions between a steel industry that applies hydrogen direct reduction (H-DR) and the electricity system of northern Europe. It aims to achieve net-zero emissions from the electricity and steel sectors in Year 2050. The study uses a techno-economic optimization model to minimize costs and meet the demands for electricity and steel. The findings highlight the importance of low-cost electricity availability and the role of wind and solar power in meeting the additional electricity demand from an electrified steel industry.

Decarbonizing primary steel production : Techno-economic assessment of a hydrogen based green steel production plant in Norway

Abhinav Bhaskar et al.

Summary: High electricity cost is the main challenge in the transition to hydrogen-based steelmaking. This study developed an open-source model to evaluate a hydrogen-based steel manufacturing plant and found that procuring electricity from the day-ahead market and increasing electrolyzer capacity can reduce production costs.

On capital utilization in the hydrogen economy: The quest to minimize idle capacity in renewables-rich energy systems

Schalk Cloete et al.

Summary: The hydrogen economy is gaining attention due to the potential of absorbing variable renewable energy production peaks through electrolysis. However, low utilization rates of different parts of the integrated electricity-hydrogen system present a fundamental challenge. Concurrent optimization of key system elements is necessary to accurately assess the costs of using hydrogen to integrate higher shares of VRE.

Review of pressurized chemical looping processes for power generation and chemical production with integrated CO2 capture

Mogahid Osman et al.

Summary: Pressurized operation plays a crucial role in chemical looping systems and has been studied extensively. The impact of pressure on reaction kinetics is less significant than previously believed. Further research is needed to determine the most effective reactor configurations and techno-economic assessments for pressurized chemical looping processes.
