Changes and release risk of typical pharmaceuticals and personal care products in sewage sludge during hydrothermal carbonization process

Fei Wang et al.

Summary: Hydrochars were prepared from municipal sewage sludge by hydrothermal carbonization treatment. The study found that reaction temperature had a greater impact on the properties of hydrochars and the presence of PPCPs than reaction time. The hydrothermal process effectively reduced the load of PPCPs in hydrochars, except for caffeine and acetaminophen, with their concentrations being affected by the reaction temperature.

Fate of Emerging Contaminants in High-Rate Activated Sludge Systems

Elena Koumaki et al.

Summary: High-rate activated sludge systems aim to maximize organic matter diversion to sludge to produce biogas, but face challenges in removing emerging contaminants. In HRAS systems, removal efficiencies are low for EDCs, with sorption onto sludge as the main removal mechanism, while biotransformation is dominant for PhACs.

Po-Hsiang Chang et al.

Summary: The study of Amitriptyline (AMI) adsorption on montmorillonite revealed that the best adsorption occurred at neutral pH, following a pseudo-second order kinetic model. The cation exchange mechanism was identified as the main adsorption mechanism.

Study on the thermal performance of carbamazepine at different temperatures, pressures and atmosphere conditions

Agnieszka Dolega et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the impact of a sample pan and measurement atmosphere on the thermal degradation kinetics of the strongly sublimating antiepileptic drug, carbamazepine. The results showed that samples treated in different conditions exhibited varied thermal behaviors, with some samples degrading in an oxidative atmosphere.
