Rationalization of Nonlinear Adsorption Energy-Strain Relations and Bronsted-Evans-Polanyi and Transition State Scaling Relationships under Strain

Jinyu Han et al.

Summary: This study investigated the variation of energetics, including adsorption energies, transition state energies, and reaction energies, with strain in catalytic materials. The results showed that energy barriers, reaction energies, and adsorption energies can vary linearly or quadratically with strain, with systems exhibiting stronger adsorbate-substrate interactions and weaker atom-atom interactions in substrates more likely to exhibit nonlinear relations. The observed nonlinear relationships were satisfactorily rationalized with equations derived from Mechanics of Solids.
