Hip prosthetic loosening: A very personal review

Bengt Mjoeberg

Summary: The loosening of hip prostheses is a complex process that may be initiated by various factors during surgery and progressively develop postoperatively, potentially leading to clinical failure. Research indicates that the best method for detection is to observe prosthetic migration by radiostereometric analysis.

A systematic review of preclinical in vivo testing of 3D printed porous Ti6Al4V for orthopedic applications, part I: Animal models and bone ingrowth outcome measures

Hannah Spece et al.

Summary: Through a systematic literature review on preclinical testing of AM porous Ti6Al4V implants, researchers found that rabbit and sheep were the most commonly used animal models, with primary quantitative outcome measures including bone ingrowth and bone-implant contact. While there were commonalities in study methods, there was also significant heterogeneity in outcome terms and definitions.

3D porous Ti6Al4V-beta-tricalcium phosphate scaffolds directly fabricated by additive manufacturing

J. Li et al.

Summary: In this study, 3D porous hybrid scaffolds made of a titanium alloy and beta-tricalcium phosphate ceramic were successfully developed using 3D fiber deposition technique. The addition of TCP improved the bioactivity of the metal alloy, and the resulting scaffolds may lead to more effective strategies for controlling the implant-bone interface in orthopaedics and craniomaxillofacial surgery, showing promising long-term clinical results.
