Aromatic tetra-glycidyl ether versus tetra-glycidyl amine epoxy networks: Influence of monomer structure and epoxide conversion

Samuel R. Swan et al.

Summary: This study investigates the differences between glycidyl ether and glycidyl amine crosslinked networks and compares the structure/property relationships of these networks in depth. The results show that despite some reduced mechanical and thermal properties, the NNE epoxy resin system is a very thermally stable high temperature epoxy resin suitable for a wide range of new applications.

The role of β relaxations in determining the compressive properties of an epoxy amine network modified with POSS and mono-functional epoxy resins

Larry Q. Reyes et al.

Summary: This study investigates the glassy state molecular mobility of modified epoxy amine networks using sub-ambient 1 relaxations and its relationship to compressive properties. Two types of additives, bulky inorganic siloxane caged epoxy functional polysilsesquioxanes (POSS) and mono-functional epoxy diluents, were used to modify the networks. Despite structural variations, the glassy state molecular mobility correlates strongly with changes in modulus and yield strain.

A comparative study on the rheological, thermal, and mechanical performance of epoxy resin modified with thermoplastics

Hongfeng Li et al.

Summary: Thermoplastic and functional polymers were used to modify epoxy resin in this study to investigate their influence on the properties of the resin. It was found that BMG had excellent toughening effect on the EP resin compared to PPO and PSF, with EP/BMG blend showing good processing performance and mechanical properties. The influence of polymers on the properties of EP resin was attributed to their molecular structures.

Highly ductile glassy epoxy systems obtained by network topology modification using partially reacted substructures

J. Gao et al.

Summary: A strategy of toughening epoxy thermosets through topological rearrangement of cross-linked networks and adding partially reacted substructures can enhance the strain at failure of the system. However, the addition of substructures also decreases the glass transition temperature of the system, with protovoid formation playing a dominant role in enhancing ductility.

The role of β relaxations in controlling compressive properties in hyperbranched polymer-modified epoxy networks

Larry Q. Reyes et al.

Summary: The study investigates the effects of incorporating a largely miscible second-generation aliphatic polyester hyperbranched polymer (HBP) as a modifier in a cured epoxy amine network on molecular mobility and compressive properties in the glassy state. The beta relaxation, determined by dynamic mechanical analysis, is used to measure short-range motion and is found to strongly correlate with changes in compressive modulus, yield stress, and strain. Parameters such as HBP concentration and interactions with the epoxy matrix play a significant role in these correlations.
