A review on physical foaming of thermoplastic and vulcanized elastomers

Wentao Zhai et al.

Summary: Elastomer foams are widely used due to their flexibility and physical foaming provides environmental-friendly and adjustable material properties, but also leads to post-foaming shrinkage issues. Researchers have made progress in improving the performance of elastomer foams by understanding the foaming mechanisms.

Thermoplastic polyurethane foams: From autoclave batch foaming to bead foam extrusion

Amin Shabani et al.

Summary: In this study, thermoplastic polyurethane foams were produced using different grades of polyurethane, and various foaming methods were employed to achieve different foam densities and morphological properties. Pressure-induced batch foaming resulted in lower density and minimum cell size, while extrusion foaming had a narrower range of foam expansion.

Mechanical and EMI shielding properties of solid and microcellular TPU/nanographite composite membranes

Xinyang Li et al.

Summary: The addition of an appropriate amount of nanographite can improve the mechanical and EMI shielding performance of TPU/graphite composite materials. While microcellular foaming compromises the tensile properties of the composites, it can significantly enhance elasticity and reduce hysteresis loss, making the materials more resilient.

Insight into the Influence of Properties of Poly(Ethylene-co-octene) with Different Chain Structures on Their Cell Morphology and Dimensional Stability Foamed by Supercritical CO2

Dongyang Li et al.

Summary: POE elastomers composition and molecular weight affect its foaming behaviors and dimensional stability. Lower octene content leads to higher melting point and crystallinity, resulting in a higher foaming temperature and larger cell diameter under high CO2 pressure.

Lightweight and strong glass fiber reinforced polypropylene composite foams achieved by mold-opening microcellular injection molding

Chunxia Yang et al.

Summary: Microcellular injection molding (MIM) is a flexible, efficient, and environmentally friendly foaming technology used to prepare plastic foams with complex shapes. Mold-opening microcellular injection molding (MOMIM) was used to prepare high-performance polypropylene/glass fiber (PP/GF) composite foams, which exhibit significantly improved mechanical properties compared to pure PP foams. MOMIM can enhance the flexural modulus of molded samples, and the addition of glass fiber in PP/GF composites can greatly increase tensile strength and modulus.
