Thermal diffusivity recovery and defect annealing kinetics of self-ion implanted tungsten prob e d by insitu transient grating spectroscopy

Abdallah Reza et al.

Summary: Tungsten is a promising candidate material for plasma-facing armour components in future fusion reactors. However, its normally excellent thermal transport properties can be degraded by irradiation. The study shows that thermal diffusivity in tungsten can recover between 450 K and 650 K, but remains reduced after annealing at higher doses. Thermal diffusivity provides an efficient tool for assessing total defect content in tungsten.

Steam oxidation of uranium mononitride in pure and reducing steam atmospheres to 1200 °C

Elizabeth S. Sooby et al.

Summary: This study provides steam oxidation kinetic data for high purity uranium mononitride (UN) at high temperatures, and observes the variation in the oxidation kinetic response of UN to the presence of carbon contaminants. The results show that high purity, high density UN samples have a delayed reaction time with steam and the reaction is suppressed in a reducing steam atmosphere, producing predominantly ammonia and UO2.

Thermal conductivity of α-U with point defects

Jie Peng et al.

Summary: A theoretical model for the thermal conductivity of alpha-U was developed, combining density functional theory calculations and the electron-phonon Boltzmann transport equation. The model incorporates both electron and phonon contributions to thermal conductivity and shows good agreement with experimental data. It examines the dominant scattering mechanism governing thermal transport in alpha-U at different temperatures and studies the impact of point defects on the thermal conductivity.

Challenges and opportunities to alloyed and composite fuel architectures to mitigate high uranium density fuel oxidation: Uranium mononitride

Jennifer K. Watkins et al.

Summary: This review discusses the challenges and opportunities for alloyed and composite fuel architectures in mitigating fuel oxidation during cladding breach in water-cooled reactors. It focuses on the oxidation performance of uranium mononitride and explores high uranium density fuels like UN, U3Si2, UC, and UB2 for use in accident tolerant and advanced technology nuclear reactors. The review also covers literature on degradation modes, thermodynamics, and oxidation performance of pure UN and UN-compounds as well as alloyed and composite architectures.

Indirect characterization of point defects in proton irradiated ceria

Vinay S. Chauhan et al.

Summary: A rate theory model informed by multimodal characterization is used to evaluate the concentration of point defects in irradiated materials. The study on cerium dioxide exposed to energetic protons at elevated temperature reveals a large concentration of cerium vacancies and interstitials under specific irradiation conditions. The model, which includes point defect generation, recombination, and clustering into stoichiometric interstitial loops, suggests a rich microstructure with resolvable extended defects and a significant concentration of point defects under these irradiation conditions.
