Transition from ballistic to thermalized transport of metal-sputtered species in a DC magnetron

Adrien Revel et al.

Summary: The tunable diode-laser induced fluorescence technique has been optimized to accurately measure the titanium-sputtered atom velocity distribution functions in a magnetron discharge operating in DC mode. By achieving high spatial and spectral resolution, the study reveals features of metal-sputtered atoms transport and thermalization, showing separation of thermalized and energetic atoms. The Monte Carlo collision approach was used to simulate sputtered metal transport from the target, while comparison between numerical and experimental results led to improved cross-section for Ti-Ar momentum transfer.
