Assessing the Wall-to-Wall Spatial and Qualitative Dynamics of the Brazilian Pasturelands 2010-2018, Based on the Analysis of the Landsat Data Archive

Claudinei Oliveira dos Santos et al.

Summary: Livestock production in Brazil is mainly extensive grazing, and a large portion of pastures are degraded. This study maps and evaluates the spatiotemporal dynamics of pasture quality in Brazil from 2010 to 2018, finding that a significant area of pastures is severely degraded. The improvement in pasture quality is unequally distributed among different property sizes.

The importance of protected areas and Indigenous lands in securing ecosystem services and biodiversity in the Cerrado

Fernando M. Resende et al.

Summary: The research found that 23.8% of PA and 32.8% of IL were highly effective in representing three or more ecosystem services in the Brazilian Cerrado. In terms of biodiversity, around 42.2% and 40.3% of PA were highly effective in representing threatened plant and vertebrate species, respectively, while 13.1% and 63.9% of IL were highly effective in capturing these species.

Key challenges for governing forest and landscape restoration across different contexts

Robin L. Chazdon et al.

Summary: Governance arrangements directly impact decision making processes and stakeholder engagement in FLR, requiring new ways of governing landscapes centered around local stakeholders. This paper explores common threads from diverse studies to highlight key challenges in effective FLR governance, discussing enabling factors and conditions to overcome deficiencies in governance processes and outcomes.
