UniProt: the universal protein knowledgebase in 2021

Alex Bateman et al.

Summary: The UniProt Knowledgebase aims to provide users with a comprehensive, high-quality set of protein sequences annotated with functional information. Updates over the past two years have increased the number of sequences to approximately 190 million, with new methods to assess proteome completeness and quality. UniProtKB has responded to the COVID-19 pandemic by expertly curating relevant entries and making them rapidly available through a dedicated portal.

Mid- to late-gestational maternal nutrient restriction followed by realimentation alters development and lipid composition of liver and skeletal muscles in ovine fetuses

Brandon Smith et al.

Summary: Maternal nutrient restriction during gestation negatively impacts offspring liver and muscle development, but realimentation may mitigate these effects. Realimentation was found to decrease the impact of late-gestational maternal nutrient restriction on fetal liver and muscle, although it also led to alterations in lipid metabolism.

NEDD8 and ubiquitin ligation by cullin-RING E3 ligases

Kheewoong Baek et al.

Summary: In summary, RING E3s are the largest family of ubiquitin and ubiquitin-like protein ligases, typically working with E2 enzymes to transfer UB or UBL to specific substrates. Multifunctional RING E3s like cullin-RING ligase family have been shown to interact with various E2s to target distinct proteins or transfer different UBLs. The recent structures of cullin-RING ligases and their partner E2 enzymes reveal multimodal mechanisms directing these enzyme active sites to modify specific targets.

Effects of low and high levels of maternal nutrition consumed for the entirety of gestation on the development of muscle, adipose tissue, bone, and the organs of Wagyu cattle fetuses

Yi Zhang et al.

Summary: This study found that high energy intake during gestation significantly promotes overall growth and development in Wagyu cattle fetuses, including increased muscle, organ, and bone mass, as well as accumulation of adipose tissue. Fetuses in the high-nutrition group outperformed those in the low-nutrition group in various parameters, indicating the significant impact of maternal nutrition on the development of muscle, bone, and fat tissue in Wagyu cattle fetuses.
