Glass forming regions, structure and properties of lanthanum barium germanate and gallate glasses

Florian Calzavara et al.

Summary: Researchers explored glass forming regions in the system GaO3/2 - GeO2 - LaO3/2 - BaO using aerodynamic levitation coupled with laser heating synthesis technique, and established structure-property relationships between the thermal and optical properties of resulting glass. They found that in GeO2-rich compositions, depolymerization of the glass network occurs due to the excess of positive charges.

Fundamental studies of magneto-optical borogermanate glasses and derived optical fibers containing Tb3+

Douglas F. Franco et al.

Summary: New magnetic glass compositions based on the (100-x)(60GeO(2) -25B(2)O(3) -4Al(2)O(3) -10Na(2)O-1PbO) -xTb(4)O(7) system were prepared using the melt-quenching technique. The materials were characterized for their structural, thermal, morphological, optical, magnetic, and magneto-optical properties. It was found that the distribution of Tb3+ ions, as well as the magnetic susceptibility, increased proportionally with the rare earth content.

Magneto-optical borogermanate glasses and fibers containing Tb3+

Douglas F. Franco et al.

Summary: This study reported a new glass composition with high concentrations of Tb3+ ions, showing homogeneous distribution of Tb3+ ions and absence of nanoclusters, as well as excellent thermal stability. The glass fiber produced demonstrated Tb3+ electronic transitions and optical windows varying from 0.4 to 1.6 μm, with Faraday rotation experiments revealing its magneto-optical properties and paramagnetic behaviors.
