Effect of Cu-induced eutectoid transformation on microstructure and mechanical properties of Ti-6Al-4V alloy by laser wire deposition

Xiang Wang et al.

Summary: The microstructure and mechanical properties of Ti-6Al-4V with Cu addition through laser wire deposition were investigated. The addition of 5.4 wt% Cu resulted in a transformation to martensite under rapid cooling conditions, while subsequent cyclic heating led to decomposition into alpha phase and nodular Ti2Cu phase. Adding 6.8 wt% Cu stimulated an active eutectoid reaction, transforming the deposited alloy into nanoscale lamellar alpha+Ti2Cu microstructure under fast cooling conditions. Tensile strength of the deposit increased by approximately 58% with the addition of 5.4 wt% Cu, but declined by about 6% with 6.8 wt% Cu due to stress concentration caused by micron-size pro-eutectoid Ti2Cu.

Biological corrosion behaviour and antibacterial properties of Ti-Cu alloy with different Ti2Cu morphologies for dental applications

Cheng Xin et al.

Summary: The study found that the morphology of the Ti2Cu phase in TiCu alloy significantly affects biological corrosion and antibacterial properties, with lamellar Ti2Cu phase having a higher galvanic interface and releasing more Cu2+ ions, resulting in a 99.5% antibacterial rate and great potential for medical implant applications.
