Solute clusters-promoted strength-ductility synergy in Al-Sc alloy

Chong Yang et al.

Summary: The study found that in Al-Sc alloys, the strengthening effect of Sc solute clusters is superior to that of Al3Sc precipitates, resulting in higher yield strength and ductility. The stability of Sc clusters at 250 degrees Celsius enables Al-Sc alloys strengthened by Sc solute clusters to have extensive applications across a wide temperature range due to their high temperature resistance.

Precipitation-hardness map for Al-Cu-Mg alloy (AA2024-T3)

V. A. Esin et al.

Summary: The precipitation map of Al-Cu-Mg alloy (AA2024-T3) was obtained by combining differential scanning calorimetry analysis and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy observations, revealing the appearance of equilibrium S-Al2CuMg phase at 85 degrees C after 1000 h of ageing. Hardness values showed that the maximum hardness was located at the boundary between S-phase + GPB zones and S-phase regions for all studied temperatures.

Precipitation processes and structural evolutions of various GPB zones and two types of S phases in a cold-rolled Al-Mg-Cu alloy

Xuanliang Chen et al.

Summary: The study investigated the age-hardening behavior and precipitates in an Al-3Mg-1Cu alloy, revealing common and novel GPB zones, as well as two types of S phases. Density functional theory calculations showed that GPBX zone is stable, with S-I and S-II phases having similar formation enthalpy. The transformation of GPB zones to S-I phases and preferential formation of S-II phases from GPBX zones along dislocation lines were observed.

A model to unravel the beneficial contributions of trace Cu in wrought Al-Mg alloys

S. Medrano et al.

Summary: The softening and strengthening effects in pre-deformed and aged Al-Mg-Cu alloys were evaluated using microscopy, mechanical testing and modeling. A refined model for work hardening response was found to accurately determine the precipitation hardening contribution. The mechanical response of these alloys was not significantly affected by Cu content, pre-deformation level or aging temperature, indicating robustness in terms of composition variations.

Enhanced Mechanical Properties in 6082 Aluminum Alloy Processed by Cyclic Deformation

Xuanliang Chen et al.

Summary: In this study, room temperature cyclic deformation was attempted to strengthen Al-Mg-Si alloys, resulting in similar strength and approximately twice the uniform elongation compared to peak aged samples. The high density of dislocations and nanoclusters observed in the cyclically deformed samples are believed to be the main reasons for this strengthening effect. Different cyclic deformation conditions were explored and their effects discussed.

The effect of chemical patterning induced by cyclic plasticity on the formation of precipitates during aging of an Al-Mg-Si alloy

Liting Shi et al.

Summary: Cyclic deformation of solution treated AA6061 results in a high number density of Mg/Si clusters, contributing to a strength comparable to T6 condition. Subsequent heat treatment further increases strength, with a shorter aging time needed compared to traditional treatments. The presence of clusters plays a crucial role in promoting a higher number density of precipitates during aging.

Effect of pre-deformation on age-hardening behaviors in an Al-Mg-Cu alloy

Xuanliang Chen et al.

Summary: Pre-deformation has a strong impact on the subsequent age-hardening behavior of the Al-3Mg1Cu alloy, accelerates precipitation, enhances hardness peaks, inhibits cluster formation, and increases the amount of precipitates along dislocation lines. This study's findings are important for the advancement of combined mechanical deformation and heat treatment processes.
