Towards the strength-ductility synergy of Al2O3/Al composite through the design of roughened interface

Zhiming Zhang et al.

Summary: By designing a roughened interface, the strength-ductility synergy of Al2O3/Al composites can be achieved, with different morphologies of asperities obtained by controlling the sintering time to enhance the strength and ductility simultaneously. The improved tensile ductility in the composite is attributed to the extrinsic toughening mechanism, offering a simple and promising approach to enhance the mechanical properties of metal matrix composites.

Elevated-temperature high-strength h-BN-doped Al2014 and Al7075 composites: Experimental and theoretical insights

Shakti Corthay et al.

Summary: High-strength Al2014 and Al7075 series composites with h-BN additives were fabricated using HEBM and SPS, showing different phase compositions compared to standard alloys. The h-BN nanosheets provided solid lubrication, prevented agglomeration, and led to improved mechanical properties in the resultant composites, with an increase in hardness and tensile strength observed in samples with 3 wt% BN doping. Elevation in strength was attributed to the high thermal stability of reinforcing phases, solid solution hardening, and Orowan strengthening mechanisms.

Microstructure evolution during AlSi10Mg molten alloy/BN microflake interactions in metal matrix composites obtained through 3D printing

Anton S. Konopatsky et al.

Summary: Metal/ceramic powder utilization offers new possibilities for 3D printing metal matrix composites with high strength, but presents challenges. This study achieved an AlSi10Mg matrix composite embedded with 1 wt% hexagonal BN microflakes and explored microstructure changes at the h-BN/melt interface during SLM. The inclusion of h-BN microflakes led to increased composite hardness and tensile strength, with AlN and AlB2 phases forming during processing.

Summary: The study found that alumina nanoparticles tend to agglomerate in Al-based nanocomposites, with the size of agglomerates depending on the nanoparticle shape and number of ARB cycles. Introducing nanoparticles into aluminum helps in structural refinement, particularly in composites reinforced with separately distributed ball-shaped nanoparticles.

Summary: This study investigates the synergistic effect between graphene nanoplates and in situ nanoparticles on aluminum matrix composites, showing that both GNPs and ZrB2 nanoparticles play a crucial role in reinforcing and toughening mechanisms. The composite with 0.1 wt% GNPs and 3 wt% ZrB2 achieved a high ultimate tensile strength of 426 MPa, 33.5% higher than that of AA6111, while maintaining an elongation greater than 15%.

Summary: In this study, plasma treatment of nanoAl/nanoSiC powder mixtures was used to improve the distribution of reinforcing phase and achieve a strong metal/ceramic interface in Al/SiC composites. The addition of 10% SiC led to significant enhancements in hardness, tensile strength, compressive strength, and wear resistance of the materials. Molecular dynamics simulations were also used to evaluate the effect of point defects on the interface properties.

Synergistic effect of graphene/boron nitride binary nanoparticles on aluminum hybrid composite properties

Mahmut Can Senel et al.

Summary: In this study, hexagonal boron nitride nanoparticulates and graphene nanoplatelets reinforced aluminum matrix composites were produced via powder metallurgy process. The mechanical properties, including density, hardness, and compressive strength, were significantly improved in composites with 1%BN and 0.15%graphene content. However, exceeding these contents resulted in decreased mechanical strength due to the aggregation of graphene nanoplatelets and nano-BN particles.
