Irrigation and Nitrogen Fertilization Alter Soil Bacterial Communities, Soil Enzyme Activities, and Nutrient Availability in Maize Crop

Ihsan Muhammad et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of irrigation and nitrogen management on soil bacterial communities in maize crops in subtropical regions of China. The results showed that low irrigation with N300 treatment improved soil enzyme activity, soil nutrient content, and bacterial diversity, and played an important role in maintaining soil fertility and microbial community balance.

Low irrigation water minimizes the nitrate nitrogen losses without compromising the soil fertility, enzymatic activities and maize growth

Ihsan Muhammad et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that nitrogen fertilization increases nitrate nitrogen leaching and negatively affects maize growth and performance under high water supply. However, under low water supply, proper fertilizer management can reduce nitrate nitrogen leaching, improve enzyme activities, and increase maize yield.

Nitrogen Fertilizer Modulates Plant Growth, Chlorophyll Pigments and Enzymatic Activities under Different Irrigation Regimes

Ihsan Muhammad et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of nitrogen fertilizer and irrigation patterns on yield, growth, chlorophyll content, reactive oxygen species (ROS), and enzyme activities in subtropical hybrid maize (Zhengda 619). The results showed that low irrigation increased dry matter, kernel yield, leaf chlorophyll, root growth, and enzyme activities, while reducing oxidative stress. Increasing nitrogen rates improved soil enzyme activities and plant antioxidant enzymes, leading to a higher kernel yield under low irrigation.
