Validation of a New Sensitive Method for the Detection and Quantification of R and S-Epimers of Ergot Alkaloids in Canadian Spring Wheat Utilizing Deuterated Lysergic Acid Diethylamide as an Internal Standard

Jensen Cherewyk et al.

Summary: This study validated a new method using ultra-high performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS) to quantify 12 epimers of ergot alkaloids in wheat. The method showed low LOD and LOQ values, allowing for sensitive detection of ergot epimers. The study also found differences between the R and S-epimers, which has rarely been documented in previous research.

Ergot Alkaloids Mycotoxins in Cereals and Cereal-Derived Food Products: Characteristics, Toxicity, Prevalence, and Control Strategies

Sofia Agriopoulou

Summary: Ergot alkaloids are mycotoxins mainly produced by fungi that infect various cereal crops, leading to concerns about food contamination. Environmental conditions and post-consumption stress can contribute to the presence of ergot alkaloids in food products.
