Relict hydrocarbon seeps in the Oligocene-Miocene Subis carbonate platform, Malaysia: Implications on hydrocarbon generation and migration pathways and potential sealing by shale gouging

Muthuvairavasamy Ramkumar et al.

Summary: This study reports on the occurrence of relict seepage in the exposed Subis carbonate platform in the South China Sea, with analyses of structural-stratigraphic controls and evaluation of hydrocarbon generation and migration pathways. Results indicate that the seepages primarily occur along a post-depositional fault plane on the eastern flank of the Subis buildup, suggesting indigenous production of hydrocarbons without migration from deeper layers. The presence of CO2 at temperatures between 300-550 degrees C further supports the organic origin of the hydrocarbons and excludes migration from deep-seated faults and connectivity between the petroleum system and the atmosphere.

The release of petroleum from Central Africa rift basins over geological time as deduced from petroleum systems modelling

A. M. Morakinyo et al.

Summary: The Cretaceous basins within the Central Africa Rift sub-system (CAS) experienced critical periods of hydrocarbon generation in the Lower Cretaceous, Upper Cretaceous and Paleocene-Eocene, leading to high volumes of petroleum seeping to the surface. The methane seepage rate for the CAS rift-basins was found to be significant, implying that catastrophic seepage may have occurred.

Biostratigraphy of Cretaceous-Neogene sedimentary infill of the Mamfe basin, southwest Cameroon: Paleoclimate implication

Jeanne Armelle Bilobe et al.

Summary: A palynological investigation of the Mamfe Basin in southwest Cameroon revealed a range of ages from early Barremian to Cenomanian and identified a level dated as Miocene to Pleistocene. The study indicated significant climatic variations, with three major paleoclimatic settings identified. The basin appears to have recorded regional climate fluctuations rather than local variations.

Organic geochemical characteristics of Lower Cretaceous source rocks and crude oils in Doseo Depression of central African rift system

Xinshun Zhang et al.

Summary: The Lower Cretaceous in the Doseo depression features three sets of source rocks, with the Kedeni Formation and Mangara Formation being the main sources, developed in lacustrine facies in low-reducing and low-oxidizing environment with varying maturity and organic matter types. The source rocks matured for hydrocarbon generation since 110 Ma, demonstrating two peaks of hydrocarbon generation and expulsion in the early Late Cretaceous and the Early Paleogene periods.

Formation of the stratigraphic hydrocarbon accumulations of the Upper Yabus Formation in the Northern Sub-basin of the Melut Basin, South Sudan

Zhongsheng Shi et al.

Summary: This study investigates the favorable exploratory interval, formation conditions, and accumulation characteristics of stratigraphic hydrocarbon accumulations in the northern Melut sub-basin based on lithology assemblage evaluation, oil-source, and migration pathway. It reveals that the Upper Yabus Formation sandstones are conducive to forming depositional stratigraphic traps, while the Adar Formation effectively seals the hydrocarbon accumulations. The research emphasizes the importance of organic matter parameters and source rock quality in providing oil source for the stratigraphic traps.
