Correlations between facial emotion processing and biochemical abnormalities in untreated adolescent patients with major depressive disorder: A proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy study

Sihui Lv et al.

Summary: Studies suggest that adolescents with MDD exhibit biases in facial emotion processing tasks, potentially linked to abnormalities in neurometabolic ratios within the fronto-striato-thalamic circuit.

Childhood trauma history is linked to abnormal brain metabolism of non-medicated adult patients with major depressive disorder

Haofei Miao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the neurometabolic changes in unmedicated MDD patients who had experienced childhood trauma, finding that childhood trauma has a long-lasting impact on the metabolism of adult MDD patients, leading to abnormal choline metabolism of the left ACC, which may be an underlying pathophysiology of MDD.

The prefrontal cortex and OCD

Susanne E. Ahmari et al.

Summary: Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a highly prevalent and severe neuropsychiatric disorder with limited effective treatments, highlighting the need for investigation of the neural substrates of the disorder. Studies have shown abnormal activity patterns in prefrontal cortex regions and connected circuits in OCD patients, which can be leveraged for developing novel targeted interventions.

Research on Cognitive Function in Anxious Depression Patients in China

Summary: Patients with anxious depression exhibit more severe depressive symptoms but better cognitive function, especially in verbal learning, compared to those with nonanxious depression. After the acute treatment phase, executive function and attention/vigilance in anxious depression patients may be remitted.

The effects of offline and online prefrontal vs parietal transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) on verbal and spatial working memory

Marko Zivanovic et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the effects of tDCS on working memory through three controlled experiments, showing differential effects of stimulation in the left and right DLPFC and PPC, as well as differences between online and offline protocols. The study did not replicate previous findings of left DLPFC tDCS effect, but demonstrated positive effects of right DLPFC and PPC stimulation on working memory. The results suggest targeting lesser-explored stimulation sites within the fronto-parietal network for better understanding the usefulness of tDCS for working memory neuromodulation.

Network-based rTMS to modulate working memory: The difficult choice of effective parameters for online interventions

Lysianne Beynel et al.

Summary: This study investigated the site-specific effects of rTMS on working memory subprocesses, specifically maintenance and manipulation, but did not find significant differences between active and sham stimulation conditions. However, exploratory analyses revealed some interesting trends related to stimulation amplitude and functional activation that may contribute to positive effects in future research.

Summary: This meta-analysis found that individuals with depression exhibit working memory deficits in n-back tasks, showing decreased accuracy and prolonged response times, especially under higher cognitive loads. Participant age and clinical status may exacerbate these deficits.

Summary: Drug-naive OCD patients exhibit impairments in working memory, including phonological loop, visual-spatial sketchpad, and central executive system, which may be associated with hypometabolism in the prefrontal cortex (PFC), especially the left PFC.
