Preliminary Study on Machining of Additively Manufactured Ti-6Al-4V

Jay K. Raval et al.

Summary: This study investigates the issues in machining additively manufactured metals and identifies the causes as material inhomogeneity, porosity, and thermal stress induced by the process. The results show that additively manufactured metals are more difficult to machine and can cause premature tool failure or surface roughness. Heat treatment can eliminate the issues related to material inhomogeneity and porosity, but there is no significant difference in surface finish under the current cutting conditions.

Effect of heat treatment on the microstructure and mechanical property of W/316L multi-material fabricated by selective laser melting

Yan Zhou et al.

Summary: A novel approach was used to manufacture and optimize W/316L multi-material, with heat treatment significantly reducing pores and cracks at the bonding region. The micro-hardness and elongation of the material were improved after heat treatment, attributed to the precipitation of secondary phases limiting dislocation slip.

Heat treatment effect on the microstructure, mechanical properties, and wear behaviors of stainless steel 316L prepared via selective laser melting

Won-Sang Shin et al.

Summary: The study investigates the impact of heat treatment on the microstructure, mechanical properties, and wear behaviors of stainless steel 316L produced via selective laser melting. Heat treatments were found to improve elongation and microstructural evolution, but decreased surface hardness and tensile strength. The study concluded that heat treatment can enhance the performance of SS316L fabricated through SLM.
