Development of mean-field continuum dislocation kinematics with junction reactions using de Rham currents and graph theory

Kyle Starkey et al.

Summary: This work presents how the evolution of dislocation networks and their reactions are introduced into continuum dislocation models. By leveraging de Rham currents theory and Frank's second rule, the study ensures that the structure of the dislocation network satisfies classical relations. Additionally, the introduction of junction point density as a new state variable represents the distribution of junction points in the crystal.

Temperature effect on tensile behavior of an interstitial high entropy alloy: Crystal plasticity modeling

Xu Zhang et al.

Summary: Previous experiments have shown that coarse-grained interstitial high entropy alloys (iHEAs) exhibit higher yield stress and better strain hardening at cryogenic conditions compared to room temperature. In this study, a micromechanism-based crystal plasticity model is developed to investigate the temperature effect on the tensile behavior of iHEAs. The developed constitutive model is verified by comparing experimental results with simulated stress-strain curves and martensite volume fraction. The contributions of different strengthening mechanisms and grain size effects are quantified to understand the temperature dependence of the iHEA's yield stress.

On the implementation of dislocation reactions in continuum dislocation dynamics modeling of mesoscale plasticity

Vignesh Vivekanandan et al.

Summary: The continuum dislocation dynamics framework aims to capture the evolution of dislocation density and deformation of crystals under mechanical loading by solving transport equations for dislocations concurrently with crystal mechanics equations, incorporating dislocation reactions to improve predictability. The proposed formulation, which includes virtual dislocations to enforce dislocation line continuity, enables accurate enforcement of divergence free condition in numerical solutions, leading to highly accurate results in comparison with previous approaches.

On the computational solution of vector-density based continuum dislocation dynamics models: A comparison of two plastic distortion and stress update algorithms

Peng Lin et al.

Summary: Continuum dislocation dynamics models of mesoscale plasticity involve coupling dislocation transport reaction equations with crystal mechanics equations, where plastic distortion evolves with dislocation transport and in turn fixes the stress. A new scheme based on field dislocation mechanics is introduced to ensure consistency between plastic distortion and dislocation content in the crystal, showing higher accuracy compared to traditional direct time integration schemes. Simulations using this method on an austenitic steel crystal under uniaxial loading and multiple slip conditions demonstrate the emergence of self-organized structures in dislocations as strain increases.
