Numerical simulation and novel methodology on resilient modulus for traffic loading on road embankment

Cafer Kayadelen et al.

Summary: This study investigates the prediction of resilient modulus using Random Forest and M5P tree regression models, as well as examines deformation characteristics of subbase materials and subgrade soil under repeated loading through numerical simulation. The performance of the models was evaluated comprehensively using statistical criteria, showing that the Random Forest model outperforms the M5P model in terms of training performances and prediction accuracies.

Predicting the compressive strength of modified recycled aggregate concrete

Cuina Yang et al.

Summary: Reuse and recycling of construction wastes effectively prevent further destruction of the environment and nature due to the construction industry. This study focuses on the reapplication of recycled aggregates (RAs) in concrete mix design and construction, aiming to compensate for the defects in recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) by adding glass fibers and silica fume variables. Various conventional, ensembled, and hybrid models are used to predict the compressive strength (CS) of RAC, and all models have provided excellent and acceptable results, especially the multilayer perceptron single model and additive regression-random Forest hybrid model.

Predicting the mechanical behaviour of a sandy clay stabilised with an alkali-activated binder

Manuela Correa-Silva et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the geomechanical behavior of low performing soils strengthened with alkali-activated materials, specifically NaOH-activated blast furnace slag, after short and long curing periods. Triaxial compression experiments were conducted to investigate the behavior of the stabilized soil, and a kinematic hardening constitutive model was calibrated and successfully captured the behavior of artificially stabilized sandy clay. The results showed similarities to cement-mixed clays and the model accurately predicted the elastoplastic transition, peak/residual shear strains, and strain-softening behavior after peak strengths in the soil specimens.

A new predictive method for the shear strength of interlayer shear weakness zone at field scales

Gang Han et al.

Summary: This study presents a method to evaluate the shear strength parameters of ISWZs in the Baihetan Hydropower Station, including classification, shear strength model, and strength characteristics study. The results suggest that the strength parameters of ISWZs determined through field tests provide a more conservative result than the shear strength model presented in this study.

Prediction of the resilient modulus of non-cohesive subgrade soils and unbound subbase materials using a hybrid support vector machine method and colliding bodies optimization algorithm

Nasrin Heidarabadizadeh et al.

Summary: In this study, a support vector machine hybridized with the colliding bodies optimization algorithm was used to model the resilient modulus of road materials. The SVMCBO method was found to be more accurate than the ANN method in predicting the M-R of non-cohesive subgrade soils and unbound subbase materials. Parametric analysis and gamma tests were conducted to evaluate the most effective parameters for the prediction of the M-R of subbase-subgrade materials.

An artificial neural network model to predict debris-flow volumes caused by extreme rainfall in the central region of South Korea

Deuk-Hwan Lee et al.

Summary: A study in South Korea developed an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) model to predict debris-flow volume, considering morphology, rainfall, and geology characteristics. The ANN model with two hidden neurons showed the highest R-2 value (0.828) and the lowest MSE value (0.022). The study demonstrated the potential of the developed ANN model as a useful resource for decision-making and barrier designing in debris-flow prone areas in South Korea.

Prediction of residual stresses in turning of pure iron using artificial intelligence-based methods

Ahmed B. Khoshaim et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the prediction of residual stresses generation during dry turning of DT4E pure iron using artificial intelligence methods and enhances the prediction accuracy with two different optimization algorithms. The results show that the ANN-FPA model has the best prediction accuracy among all models, with high coefficient of determination values for both radial and circumferential residual stresses.
