Association of Circulating Magnesium Levels in Patients With Alzheimer's Disease From 1991 to 2021: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Ke Du et al.

Summary: This meta-analysis found that the levels of magnesium in the blood were significantly reduced in Alzheimer's disease patients compared to healthy controls, while the levels in cerebrospinal fluid showed a non-significant decrease. These findings suggest that magnesium deficiency may be a risk factor for Alzheimer's disease, and magnesium supplementation may be a potentially valuable adjunctive treatment.

Magnesium-L-threonate exhibited a neuroprotective effect against oxidative stress damage in HT22 cells and Alzheimer's disease mouse model

Ying Xiong et al.

Summary: The study confirmed that Magnesium-L-threonate (MgT) can inhibit oxidative stress damage in A beta(25-35)-treated HT22 cells and APP/PS1 mice, by improving cell viability, reducing ROS formation, and apoptosis. MgT also ameliorated cognitive deficits, suppressed hippocampal neuron apoptosis, and regulated the expression of related proteins.

The role of biofactors in the prevention and treatment of age-related diseases

Jan Frank et al.

Summary: The current demographic trend towards an aging society has led to an increase in the number of senior citizens and the prevalence of age-related diseases, with individual nutrient deficiencies being associated with the risks of such diseases. Nutrition and dietary intake of biofactors play a major role in human health and the development of age-related diseases, with certain biofactors potentially serving as cost-effective strategies for prevention or treatment.

Effects of Magnesium Orotate, Benfotiamine and a Combination of Vitamins on Mitochondrial and Cholinergic Function in the TgF344-AD Rat Model of Alzheimer's Disease

Christian Viel et al.

Summary: Glucose hypometabolism, mitochondrial dysfunction, and cholinergic deficits have been reported in early stages of Alzheimer's disease. The study found that TgF344-AD rats exhibit mitochondrial and cholinergic dysfunction similar to AD patients, and a specific cocktail can partially correct this dysfunction, particularly in aged rats. The TgF344-AD rat model shows promise for further research on potential treatment approaches for AD.

Brain cells derived from Alzheimer's disease patients have multiple specific innate abnormalities in energy metabolism

Woo-In Ryu et al.

Summary: The study found that neural progenitor cells and astrocytes differentiated from induced pluripotent stem cells of late-onset Alzheimer's disease patients exhibit multiple inter-related bioenergetic alterations, including changes in mitochondrial respiration, reduced levels of NAD/NADH, and diminished glucose uptake. These findings suggest that Alzheimer's disease may involve multiple hits and innate inefficient cellular energy management.

Phosphate Brain Energy Metabolism and Cognition in Alzheimer's Disease: A Spectroscopy Study Using Whole-Brain Volume-Coil 31Phosphorus Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy at 7Tesla

Namrata Das et al.

Summary: This study utilized P-31 MRS technology to measure phosphate energy and membrane metabolites in participants with different cognitive states, finding lower phosphate-BEM in the aMCI group compared to CN group and increased metabolic stress indicator in the AD group. Additionally, a significant positive correlation was found between magnesium levels and cognitive performance in the CN group.
