Abdominal obesity negatively influences key metrics of reverse cholesterol transport

Jennifer Hardfeldt et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the impact of cardiometabolic risk factors on the anti-atherogenic function of HDL particles, revealing associations between cardiometabolic risk and HDL function and maturation, with abdominal obesity identified as a significant contributor to alterations in key metrics of RCT.

Adipose tissue insulin resistance and lipidome alterations as the characterizing factors of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis

Summary: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and its more severe form NASH are common complications in patients with obesity and type 2 diabetes. Understanding the pathogenesis and factors influencing the development of fatty liver disease can help in early identification and prevention of these serious conditions.

Transcriptional, epigenetic and metabolic signatures in cardiometabolic syndrome defined by extreme phenotypes

Denis Seyres et al.

Summary: This study aims to improve the understanding of cardiometabolic syndrome pathophysiology and its relationship with thrombosis by generating a multi-omic disease signature. The results showed that extreme phenotype groups could be distinguished from lean individuals and from each other across all data layers. In addition, the gene expression landscape of the obese group changed after surgical intervention, indicating improvement in specific pathways.

Lipid Remodeling in Hepatocyte Proliferation and Hepatocellular Carcinoma

Zoe Hall et al.

Summary: Our study demonstrates that specific lipid metabolic pathways are coherently altered when hepatocytes switch to proliferation, providing potential targets for therapeutic strategies and prognostic biomarkers of HCC. By integrating metabolomics, lipidomics, and transcriptomics, we have linked changes in the lipidome of proliferating hepatocytes to altered metabolic pathways including lipogenesis and generation of phosphatidylcholine. Additionally, we confirmed this altered lipid signature in human HCC and found a positive correlation of monounsaturated phosphatidylcholine with hallmarks of cell proliferation and hepatic carcinogenesis.

Hepatic lipidomic remodeling in severe obesity manifests with steatosis and does not evolve with non-alcoholic steatohepatitis

Summary: The study reveals that liver lipidome undergoes significant changes with worsening NAFLD, while the development of NASH does not lead to additional changes. Plasma lipid variables can serve as biomarkers for NAFLD, enhancing diagnostic accuracy and research in this field.

Summary: Plasma HDL-cholesterol levels are negatively correlated with the risk of ASCVD, but genetic approaches to increase HDL levels do not reduce this risk. The mechanism of reverse cholesterol transport involving FCh transfer between HDL and macrophages is still under debate in relation to ASCVD.

Summary: The study found significant differences in the distribution of OCFA-containing lipids across different lipid classes, with certain OCFA-containing phospholipids in women showing a negative association with T2D risk, while no significant inverse associations were observed in men. Furthermore, consumption of fat-rich dairy and fiber-rich foods were positively correlated with OCFA-containing lipid plasma levels, while red meat was inversely correlated.
