The Discovery of the Buffer Capacity of Various Types of Polyelectrolyte Microcapsules

Alexey V. Dubrovskii et al.

Summary: Polyelectrolyte microcapsules, obtained by adsorbing oppositely charged polyelectrolytes onto colloidal particles, have been found to possess buffer capacity. Microcapsules with BSA exhibit higher buffer capacity in acidic medium compared to those without protein. The composition of microcapsules affects their buffer capacity behavior.

Expanding the structural diversity of polyelectrolyte complexes and polyzwitterions

Angelika E. Neitzel et al.

Summary: This article discusses recent progress in uncovering structure-property relationships in charged systems, focusing on polyzwitterions and polyelectrolyte complexes. The effects of structural variations on the fundamental phase behavior of polyelectrolyte complexes and the relationship between chemical structure and fundamental/applied properties in polyelectrolytes are examined. Additionally, promising chemistries to expand the structural landscape of charged macromolecules are presented to stimulate new research in understanding the fundamental design principles for these materials.

New sight at the organization of layers of multilayer polyelectrolyte microcapsules

Egor Musin et al.

Summary: The study found that the surface of polyelectrolyte microcapsules with a dissolved CaCO3 core exhibited mixed polyelectrolyte layers, while those with an undissolved CaCO3 core did not, indicating mixing of polyelectrolyte layers during the dissolution stage of the CaCO3 core. Additionally, microcapsules encapsulating proteins showed partial mixing of polyelectrolyte layers, possibly due to the dense and well-formed shell of such microcapsules. These findings are consistent with the surface charge analysis of the microcapsules.
