Cancer statistics, 2022

Summary: Each year, the American Cancer Society compiles data on cancer occurrence and outcomes in the United States. The latest data shows that breast and prostate cancer progress has stagnated, while lung cancer has shown improvements in survival rates. Lung cancer incidence for advanced disease has declined while localized-stage rates have increased, resulting in higher survival rates. Mortality patterns align with incidence trends, with lung cancer deaths declining rapidly, breast cancer deaths slowing, and prostate cancer deaths stabilizing.

Ribosomal Protein S6: A Potential Therapeutic Target against Cancer?

Yong Weon Yi et al.

Summary: Ribosomal protein S6 (RPS6) is a component of the 40S small ribosomal subunit and is involved in the control of mRNA translation. Phospho (p)-RPS6 has been identified as a surrogate marker for the activated PI3K/AKT/mTORC1 pathway, which is involved in many types of cancer. Research suggests that RPS6 may play an important role in maintaining cancer cell proliferation.

Potentiating Therapeutic Effects of Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor Inhibition in Triple-Negative Breast Cancer

Kyu Sic You et al.

Summary: Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is a subset of breast cancer with aggressive characteristics and limited therapeutic options, posing a challenge due to the lack of appropriate therapeutic targets. Despite the association of high EGFR expression with poor prognosis in TNBC patients, targeted anti-EGFR therapies have shown limited efficacy. Combination strategies using clinically approved EGFR inhibitors offer a promising approach to overcoming TNBC's intrinsic resistance to EGFR inhibitors.

Roles of Rho-associated kinase in lung cancer (Review)

Muhammad Asyaari Zakaria et al.

Summary: Overexpression of Rho-associated kinase (ROCK) in lung cancer is associated with tumor growth, making it a potential target for lung cancer therapies. In pre-clinical studies, ROCK has been found to play a significant role in cancer cell apoptosis, proliferation, migration, invasion and angiogenesis. ROCK inhibition may reduce multiple hallmarks of cancer, particularly by decreasing cancer cell migration, which is crucial for metastasis.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.

Identification of Hub Genes and Pathways of Triple Negative Breast Cancer by Expression Profiles Analysis

Liqi Li et al.

Summary: This study aimed to characterize hub gene expression in TNBC and identified six key genes associated with cell adhesion, tumorigenesis, and cellular immunity. Survival analysis and experimental validation confirmed the potential of these hub genes as prognostic predictors for TNBC treatment.

Targeted Therapeutic Strategies for Triple-Negative Breast Cancer

Ying Li et al.

Summary: TNBC, characterized by absence of ER, PR, and HER2 expression, is a highly aggressive subtype of breast cancer. Conventional chemotherapy remains the main treatment, but the lack of targeted therapies has led to exploration of PARP inhibitors and immune checkpoint inhibitors as potential options. Other agents targeting various pathways are also under investigation.

Knockdown of Annexin-A1 Inhibits Growth, Migration and Invasion of Glioma Cells by Suppressing the PI3K/Akt Signaling Pathway

Liqing Wei et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that ANXA1 regulates proliferation, migration, and invasion of glioma cells via the PI3K/AKT signaling pathway. Down-regulation of ANXA1 inhibits cell proliferation, induces apoptosis, reduces tumor growth rate and weight, and causes G2/M phase arrest.
