Speed-Specificity Trade-Offs in the Transcription Factors Search for Their Genomic Binding Sites

Tamar Jana et al.

Summary: Transcription factors regulate gene expression by binding DNA sequences with specific motifs recognized by their DNA-binding domains, but the trade-offs between binding specificity and detection speed are rarely addressed. The recently described "distributed specificity" paradigm suggests that intrinsically disordered regions may promote specificity while reducing the time needed for TF-target search.
