Suppression of hydrogen-air explosions by hydrofluorocarbons

Mengdi Gao et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effectiveness of fluorinated species CHF3 and C2HF5 in suppressing premixed hydrogen-air explosions. Both CHF3 and C2HF5 are found to effectively reduce the thermal expansion ratio, increase flame thickness, and decrease key explosion parameters as suppressant concentration increases. C2HF5 is shown to be more effective than CHF3 in suppressing explosions by converting more H atoms to HF formation through elementary reactions.
