A Theoretical Investigation of Cu+, Ni2+ and Co2+-Exchanged Zeolites for Hydrogen Storage

M. Olus Ozbek et al.

Summary: This study investigates the H-2 adsorption on Cu+, Ni2+ and Co2+-exchanged SSZ-13 (CHA) and SSZ-39 (AEI) using periodic DFT computations. The most stable Cu+ position was found to be the 6-membered-ring window for both zeolites. Similarly, for the investigated Ni2+ and Co2+ loadings on 6-membered-ring windows, the third nearest neighbor Al positions, i. e., Al-O-Si-O-Si-O-Al coordination, was found to be the most stable position. The H-2 adsorption energies on the Ni2+ and Co2+-exchanged zeolites were found to be between -15 and -44 kJ/mol. Higher energy values were observed on the AEI framework, especially when two Al atoms have the Al-O-Si-O-Al configuration. Lesser interaction of the d-orbitals in the case of the Co2+ and Ni2+ cations resulted in heat of H-2 adsorption close to optimum values required for H-2 storage on porous materials.

Refuelling scenarios of a light urban fuel cell vehicle with metal hydride hydrogen storage. Comparison with compressed hydrogen storage counterpart

Dimitrios Apostolou

Summary: The high price of hydrogen fuel in the fuel cell vehicle refuelling market is determined by production costs and capital costs of refuelling station components. The dominant hydrogen storage technology uses high-pressure compressed tanks, but metal hydride storage shows potential for lower refuelling costs. However, storing more hydrogen in metal hydride tanks can lead to higher costs for consumers compared to compressed gas.

Xin Zhang et al.

Summary: Using ultrafine magnesium hydride nanoparticles without scaffolds or supports, reversible hydrogen storage at ambient temperature with a capacity of 6.7 wt% was achieved, thanks to thermodynamic destabilization and decreased kinetic barriers. The nanoparticles exhibited stable and rapid hydrogen cycling behavior at 150 degrees C, showing a significant improvement compared to bulk MgH2. This study brings magnesium hydride closer to practical applications and introduces new pathways for fabricating sensitive nanoparticles.
