Effects of water subdroplet location on the start of puffing/micro-explosion in composite fuel-water droplets

G. Castanet et al.

Summary: A new approach is proposed to verify the predictions of a puffing/microexplosion model by implementing an analytical solution to the heat transfer equation within a composite droplet. The comparison between the predictions of the numerical code with this model and a fully numerical solution supports both approaches. The model is extended to consider the shifting of water subdroplets in fuel droplets, and the results show that even with a half of the maximal possible distance, the errors in times to puffing/microexplosion obtained using the original and generalised models do not exceed 5%.

Transcritical evaporation and micro-explosion of ethanol-diesel droplets under diesel engine-like conditions

Ping Yi et al.

Summary: The study focuses on the micro-explosion of blended ethanol-diesel droplets under diesel engine-like conditions, using a model to predict the bubble generation, growth, and explosion process. It is found that the heat transfer rate and superheat limit are predominant factors under low pressures, while the competition among evaporation rate, heating rate, transcritical transition, and bubble growth rate determines the micro-explosion under higher pressures.

Puffing/micro-explosion in composite fuel/water droplets heated in flames

D. V. Antonov et al.

Summary: The results of experimental and theoretical investigations show that the time to puffing/micro-explosion of rapeseed oil/water droplets increases with initial droplet radii in both ethanol and propane/butane mixture flames. The time is shorter in a propane/butane mixture flame than in an ethanol flame, and the temperature at the water/rapeseed oil interface reaching the water nucleation temperature is linked with the start of puffing/micro-explosion.

A simple model for breakup time prediction of water-heavy fuel oil emulsion droplets

Stavros Fostiropoulos et al.

Summary: The behavior of W/HFO emulsion droplets inside combustion chambers undergoing explosive boiling and fragmentation was studied using a CFD model. The model accurately predicts the breakup time of the emulsion droplets, which can be split into two distinct stages involving heating and vapor bubble formation followed by vapor bubble growth leading to droplet breakup. The fitting parameters of the model are found to be accurate within a certain range of pressure, temperature, depth of water droplets, and Weber number.

Minimal heating rate for isobaric nucleation at the spinodal in liquids

Tali Bar-Kohany

Summary: A thermodynamic model has been developed to determine the minimal heating rate required for rapid isobaric nucleation at the spinodal limit for both homogeneous and heterogeneous nucleation. The study found that the minimal heating rate for heterogeneous nucleation of water at 1 atmosphere is about 10^9K/s, and decreases with increasing pressure.

Puffing/micro-explosion in rapeseed oil/water droplets: The effects of coal micro-particles in water

D. Antonov et al.

Summary: This paper experimentally investigates puffing and micro-explosions in composite water/rapeseed oil droplets in the presence of lignite and bituminous coal micro-particles. It was found that the time to puffing/micro-explosion and the average radii of child droplets decrease with increasing gas temperature. The presence of bituminous coal leads to a visible decrease in these radii.

Puffing/micro-explosion of two closely spaced composite droplets in tandem: Experimental results and modelling

D. Antonov et al.

Summary: The lead droplet always puffs/micro-explodes before the downstream droplet, and the difference between their times decreases with increasing distance between the droplets. The puffing/micro-explosion time of both droplets increases with increasing distance between droplets.

Relative assessment of performance and emission characteristics of various biodiesel water emulsion blends in DI diesel engine

N. S. Senthur et al.

Summary: Different experiments were conducted to find better replacements for conventional diesel in engines, comparing diesel-water emulsion with eucalyptus-water emulsion as alternative fuels. The study showed that diesel-water emulsion performs better than traditional diesel, while eucalyptus-water emulsion is a convincing replacement for E20 biodiesel.
