A Comparison of Caregiver Burden for Different Types of Dementia: An 18-Month Retrospective Cohort Study

Wen-Chien Huang et al.

Summary: This study found that the etiology of dementia affects the burden experienced by caregivers, with those caring for patients with Lewy body disease reporting higher levels of burden. Caregivers face higher burden when patients have more severe dementia, neuropsychiatric symptoms, and when there are multiple caregivers or a reliance on social resources. The depressive mood of caregivers also predicts higher burden. It is important for dementia care teams to provide personalized education and appropriate resources to support caregivers.

The Impact of Social Isolation Due to COVID-19 on Symptom Progression in People With Dementia: Findings of the SOLITUDE Study

Riccardo Manca et al.

Summary: The study found that the lockdown had limited impact on the symptoms of people with dementia and the burden on their caregivers. However, the amount of time spent under social restrictions before the lockdown appeared to negatively affect the cognitive performance of patients. Caregivers reporting worsening of neuropsychiatric symptoms and faster disease progression in patients also reported higher burden.

Positive and negative experiences of caregiving in dementia: The role of sense of coherence

Manuel Goncalves-Pereira et al.

Summary: The study found a link between low SOC and high psychological distress, but no significant associations with subjective burden and positive aspects of caregiving. Additional analysis revealed a connection between low SOC, less emotional support, and past psychiatric illness.

Strengthening sense of coherence: Evidence from a physical activity intervention targeting vulnerable adults

Kristina Thompson et al.

Summary: This study found evidence that SOC can be significantly strengthened in the context of community interventions. Participants with weak SOC at baseline reported a median one-point stronger SOC at T3, while those with moderate or strong SOC at baseline did not show a median change between T0 and T3. Additionally, individuals with weaker SOC scores were most likely to have stronger SOC at T3 based on the results of the regression analyses.
