Variation patterns and driving factors of regional atmospheric CO2 anomalies in China

Ying Fu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the inter-annual and inter-monthly variations of atmospheric CO2 anomaly (oXCO(2)) in different regions of China based on satellite observations. A relationship model between regional oXCO(2) and various factors was established. Results indicated diverse oXCO(2) patterns across different regions, with significant variations observed in southern coastal areas and southwestern plateau regions.

Analyzing spatio-temporal patterns in atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration across Iran from 2003 to 2020

Seyed Mohsen Mousavi et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the spatiotemporal patterns of atmospheric CO2 concentration in Iran from 2003 to 2020 and identified the factors influencing these patterns. The results showed an increasing gradient of CO2 concentration from north to south and from west to east in Iran, with vegetation abundance, precipitation, and air temperature playing significant roles. Vegetation abundance explained most of the spatial variation in CO2 concentration.

The potential of CO2 satellite monitoring for climate governance: A review

Guanna Pan et al.

Summary: This paper evaluates the capabilities of CO2 satellites as objective, independent, potentially low-cost and external data sources for monitoring energy-related anthropogenic CO2 emissions. Major CO2 satellites like SCIAMACHY, GOSAT, and OCO-2 are focused on due to their wider research applications and higher CO2 sensitivity.

Can a regional-scale reduction of atmospheric CO2 during the COVID-19 pandemic be detected from space? A case study for East China using satellite XCO2 retrievals

Michael Buchwitz et al.

Summary: The study examined the reduction of anthropogenic CO2 emissions in East China during the COVID-19 pandemic by analyzing space-based observations of atmospheric CO2. Results showed a decrease in emissions by approximately 10% in March and April 2020, but with significant variability and differences across the satellite data products analyzed. Challenges in accurately detecting and quantifying emission reductions with current satellite datasets were highlighted, suggesting a need for more sophisticated analysis methods incorporating transport modeling and a priori information on CO2 surface fluxes.
