Thermal regime of sedimentary basins in the Tarim, Upper Yangtze and North China Cratons, China

Nansheng Qiu et al.

Summary: Thermal regime and thermal history play a crucial role in basin dynamics and hydrocarbon generation of source rocks. There are significant differences in thermal regimes among three typical cratons in China: North China Craton (NCC), Yangtze Craton (YC), and Tarim Craton (TC). The thermal regimes of the Bohai Bay Basin, Tarim Basin, and Sichuan Basin were studied in this paper. The study provides important geothermal evidence for hydrocarbon generation and phase distribution of oil and gas in deep and/or ultra-deep basins.

Tectonic evolution of the Sichuan Basin, Southwest China

Shugen Liu et al.

Summary: Surface deformation in the Sichuan basin is influenced by two weak extension and compression episodes, leading to the formation of specific structures. The evolution of the basin appears to be controlled by deformation from its peripheral orogens rather than deep lithospheric and mantle processes.

Mineralogical and geochemical characteristics of altered volcanic ashes (tonsteins and K-bentonites) from the latest Permian coal-bearing strata of western Guizhou Province, southwestern China

Minglian Shen et al.

Summary: This study analyzes the mineralogical and geochemical compositions of volcanic ashes from the Late Permian coal-bearing strata in southwest China, revealing their distinct classification into tonsteins and K-bentonites based on the relative abundances of kaolinite and mixed-layer illite/smectite (I/S). The volcanic ashes are associated with felsic volcanic eruptions and likely originated from at least two felsic sources, indicating a complex geological history in the region.
