Contribution of foods prepared away from home to intakes of energy and nutrients of public health concern in adults: a systematic review

Lyndal Wellard-Cole et al.

Summary: Eating out is associated with increased energy and nutrient intake in adults, especially in males and younger individuals. However, there is heterogeneity in defining foods prepared outside of home, and studies often rely on self-reported data which may be prone to misreporting. Policy and practice initiatives are needed to address the negative impact of eating out on diets.

Global, regional and national epidemiology and prevalence of child stunting, wasting and underweight in low- and middle-income countries, 2006-2018

Paddy Ssentongo et al.

Summary: This study estimated the prevalence of undernutrition in low- and middle-income countries using nationally representative data and explored the sources of variation. Stunting, wasting, and underweight prevalence were found to be 29.1%, 6.3%, and 13.7% respectively, with certain regions showing higher rates than the global average. The study highlights regional disparities in undernutrition and the need to address them to achieve the sustainable development goal of ending undernutrition by 2030.

Street Food Stand Availability, Density, and Distribution Across Income Levels in Mexico City

Jose B. Rosales Chavez et al.

Summary: Street food stands (SFS) are understudied in the food environment, with a lack of rigorous research on their availability and distribution. A study in Mexico City found that while SFS were present in all income levels, they were more available and dense in middle-income neighborhoods. The distribution of SFS was primarily near homes, transportation centers, and worksites, with limited presence near schools possibly due to local policies. Further research is needed to explore the relationships between SFS availability, density, distribution, and existing structures and processes.

Towards unified and impactful policies to reduce ultra-processed food consumption and promote healthier eating

Barry M. Popkin et al.

Summary: The global rise in obesity and nutrition-related non-communicable diseases (NCDs) necessitates decisive new food policy initiatives. Ultra-processed foods (UPFs) and drinks have negative impacts on weight gain and NCD risk. Some countries are taking action, such as implementing taxes on ultra-processed drinks and developing effective package labelling.

The Contribution of Foods Prepared Outside the Home to the Diets of 18-to 30-Year-Old Australians: The MYMeals Study

Lyndal Wellard-Cole et al.

Summary: Young Australian adults, particularly those aged 18-30, consume a significant portion of their energy and macronutrients from food prepared outside home. Independent outlets, not required to label menus, contribute a higher percentage of energy intake compared to menu labelling outlets. Public health policy responses such as extended menu labelling and public education campaigns are suggested to promote healthier food choices among young adults.
