Weld pool dynamics and joining mechanism in pulse wave laser beam welding of Ti-6Al-4V titanium alloy sheets assembled in butt joint with an air gap

Jicheng Chen et al.

Summary: A validated CFD model was developed to simulate the dynamic pulse wave laser welding (PWLBW) process of Ti-6Al-4V alloy sheets, revealing the joining mechanism, heat, and flow behaviors during welding. As heat input increases, liquid bridges form and extend in the middle height of the sheets, while strong laser power disturbance causes complete closure and reopening of the weld bead.
