Neutron imaging for geomechanics: A review

Alessandro Tengattini et al.

Summary: In recent decades, advanced experimental techniques such as X-ray and neutron imaging have provided unprecedented insights into the behavior of geomaterials. Neutron imaging, with its unique properties including high sensitivity to hydrogen, high penetration into metals, and isotope sensitivity, has shown to be an extremely valuable tool in experimental geomechanics. Recent developments, such as combining neutron imaging with simultaneous X-rays and improving spatial and temporal resolution, are highlighted for their potential contributions to the field.

Unified constitutive model for granular-fluid mixture in quasi-static and dense flow regimes

Xiaogang Guo et al.

Summary: This study proposes a unified constitutive model for granular-fluid material, applicable to quasi-static and dense flow regimes. By considering the main intergranular interactions and granular-fluid interactions, as well as utilizing the Mohr-Coulomb model and a Bagnold-type relation, control over mechanical behaviors is achieved. Analytical solutions are obtained for dry granular flows in various configurations, providing new insights into dense granular flow behavior.

DEM numerical tests on dry granular specimens: the role of strain rate under evolving/unsteady conditions

Irene Redaelli et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the mechanical behavior of dry granular materials under evolving and steady conditions, analyzing the role of strain rate, void ratio, and imposed pressure. The aim is to obtain numerical data useful for defining constitutive relationships capable of reproducing solid-to-fluid phase transitions. Novelty lies in the type of loading tests performed, inspired by flowing granular masses, and the interpretation of results based on state variables and energy evolution to highlight phase transition processes.

Dry granular masses impacting on rigid obstacles: numerical analysis and theoretical modelling

Irene Redaelli et al.

Summary: The study emphasizes the importance of assessing the time evolution of impact force exerted by dry flowing masses on rigid obstacles for dynamic design of sheltering structures and vulnerability evaluation of existing structures. A physically based force-time function is proposed to correlate local information with macroscopic response, providing insight into the impact process and factors influencing impact force-time evolution.
