Evolution of anisotropy with saturation and its implications for the elastoplastic responses of clay rocks

Sabrina C. Y. Ip et al.

Summary: The mechanical properties of clay rocks evolve with the degree of saturation, leading to changes in stiffness and strength anisotropy. Numerical models that capture the evolving elastic and plastic anisotropy with saturation are required for accurate predictions. The study presents an anisotropy framework for coupled solid deformation-fluid flow in unsaturated elastoplastic media, demonstrating the role of evolving stiffness and strength anisotropy in the mechanical behavior of clay rocks.

The influence of anisotropy on compaction bands: The case of coaxiality between stress and fabric anisotropy tensors

Chara Prassa et al.

Summary: Compaction bands are localized failure patterns that appear in highly porous rock material under the effect of relatively high confining pressure. The study focused on the mechanism leading to the onset of compaction bands using a viscoplasticity model, showing that isotropic hardening promotes compaction localization while rotational hardening has a slightly negative effect on the onset of compaction localization.

Time scales in the primary and secondary compression of soils

Yingxiao Liu et al.

Summary: The last few decades have witnessed a significant increase in research on analytical and semi-analytical solutions to the one-dimensional consolidation problem of soils. However, little attention has been paid to the time scales arising from combined primary and secondary compression. This paper provides closed-form analytical solutions and quantitative analysis of the time scales involved in such coupled hydromechanical processes.

The Role of Stratigraphy and Loading History in Generating Complex Compaction Bands in Idealized Field-Scale Settings

Ghassan Shahin et al.

Summary: The Buckskin Gulch locality in Utah exemplifies compaction localization with distinct stratigraphic heterogeneity and multiple sets of deformation bands. The formation and propagation of these complex structures are influenced by various local and ambient factors, and our study shows that system stratigraphy can lead to the emergence of coexisting compaction bands with different characteristics. Despite limitations, geomechanics computations complement field observations and validate site-specific reconstruction hypotheses.

Compaction Banding in High-Porosity Carbonate Rocks: 1. Experimental Observations

Youssouf Abdallah et al.

Summary: The study investigates the formation mechanisms of compaction bands using Digital Volume Correlation and X-Ray Computed Tomography images of Saint-Maximin limestone samples. A new analysis method is proposed to identify the type of observed localization bands. Results show that compaction bands are found at different confining pressures compared to shear bands, with porosity heterogeneity significantly affecting strain localization. Scanning Electron Microscopy observations reveal differences in grain crushing and cement cracking in high and low-porosity zones.

Mechanisms of creep in shale from nanoscale to specimen scale

Qing Yin et al.

Summary: This paper proposed a scale-bridging technique to study the creep phenomena in shale at different scales and explored the creep mechanisms. Simulation results indicated that creep of the shale sample is mainly caused by viscoplastic deformation of the material, which is highly dependent on stress rate. Additionally, simulations of triaxial creep showed that the creep behavior of the shale sample is influenced by organics and clay constituents.

Methodology for the nonlinear coupled multi-physics simulation of mineral dissolution

Li Li et al.

Summary: This article presents a numerical methodology for simulating mineral dissolution, considering complex flow patterns and dissolution rate. Through numerical simulations, the evolution of dissolved mineral in cavities and the impact of Peclet number on dissolution are analyzed. The proposed model offers a cost-effective approach for long-term dissolution simulations with good spatial and temporal convergence.

Impacts of saturation-dependent anisotropy on the shrinkage behavior of clay rocks

Sabrina C. Y. Ip et al.

Summary: Geomaterials like soils and rocks can exhibit inherent anisotropy due to mineral grains/cracks orientation and can be partially saturated with various fluids. The saturation-dependent stiffness and hydraulic anisotropy of these materials influence their shrinkage behavior.
