Mesh refinement procedures for the phase field approach to brittle fracture

F. Freddi et al.

Summary: Two refinement procedures for phase field approach are proposed to accurately approximate crack topology, with energetic criterion determining active zones. Global and global/local refinement strategies are investigated, with the latter dynamically updating and adaptively refining local meshes to solve displacement and phase field problems. Performance analysis is conducted in representative examples of stable and brutal crack propagation.

Coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical-phase field modeling for fire-induced in concrete

Panpan Cheng et al.

Summary: This paper aims to develop a coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical-phase field model to investigate the mechanism of fire-induced spalling in concrete. The phase field method is used for crack modeling, and the effects of length scale parameter, solution methods, and fracture on mechanical fields, mass transfer, and heat conduction are studied. The study concludes that thermal expansion and vapor pressure are significant factors in spalling.

Phase-field cohesive zone modeling of multi-physical fracture in solids and the open-source implementation in COMSOL MULTIPHYSICS

Wan-Xin Chen et al.

Summary: Despite the popularity of phase-field models for fracture in purely mechanical problems, their application to multi-physics problems is less reported due to theoretical complexity and cumbersome implementation. In this study, the phase-field cohesive zone model is adopted to address fracture in various multi-physics problems and open-source implementations are presented in COMSOL MULTIPHYSICS. Validation shows that PF-CZM can well capture typical fracture characteristics in multi-physics problems.

Phase field modelling of fracture and fatigue in Shape Memory Alloys

Marlini Simoes et al.

Summary: A new phase field framework is presented for modeling fracture and fatigue in Shape Memory Alloys (SMAs), showcasing its potential in capturing main fracture features associated with SMAs. The model demonstrates capabilities in handling crack tip fields and complex cracking phenomena, such as unstable crack growth and mixed-mode fracture. Additionally, the framework is extended to fatigue to capture crack nucleation and propagation in biomedical stents using nitinol SMAs.

Fracture of thermo-elastic solids: Phase-field modeling and new results with an efficient monolithic solver

Tushar Kanti Mandal et al.

Summary: Thermally induced cracking is a common issue in engineering, and the use of phase-field models (PFMs) shows promise in modeling complex crack patterns. However, previous PFMs for thermally induced fracture had limitations in sensitivity to length scale and being restricted to brittle fracture. To address this, an extended phase-field regularized cohesive zone model (PF-CZM) was proposed, with a rational degradation function and a monolithic solver, providing better performance in capturing the physics of thermally induced fracture and faster computation.
