Summary: The water-to-land transition in vertebrate evolution presents new challenges and opportunities for the brain's computational affordances. Changes in sensory modalities and the expansion of the visual system, as well as the multiplication of limbs, pose computational challenges that promise great rewards. Making the right decision when the wrong one means death may be the basis of planning for land-dwelling organisms with large brains and long lifespans. Integrating different brain regions becomes a substantial cognitive transition as significant as the change in ecology.
