Invertebrate turnover along gradients of anthropogenic salinisation in rivers of two German regions

Trong Dieu Hien Le et al.

Summary: The study found that turnover in freshwater invertebrates along gradients of anthropogenic electrical conductivity change can be significant, with certain invertebrates serving as reliable indicators of low or high EC change. Elevated nutrient concentrations linked to land use may exacerbate effects of EC on communities in water. The change in EC, quantified as the difference between measured EC and modeled background EC, can be used to examine the response of invertebrate communities to increasing anthropogenic salinity concentrations in rivers.

Crab in amber reveals an early colonization of nonmarine environments during the Cretaceous

Javier Luque et al.

Summary: Amber fossils provide valuable insights into the anatomy, biology, and ecology of extinct organisms. In this study, the first record of true crabs in amber from the Cretaceous of Myanmar is presented, shedding light on the evolutionary history of crabs and providing a calibration point for molecular divergence time estimates. The fossil, with its well-preserved features, bridges the gap between molecular divergence predictions and the fossil record, providing important information on the evolutionary timeline of higher crown eubrachyurans.

Osmoregulatory power influences tissue ionic composition after salinity acclimation in aquatic decapods

Andre L. R. Cuenca et al.

Summary: This study investigates the response of decapod crustaceans to salinity changes through osmoregulatory and cell volume regulatory mechanisms. Four different species exhibited varied hemolymph osmolality and ion concentrations when exposed to different salinity levels, with a higher correlation between hemolymph and muscle ions observed in species with lower osmoregulatory strength. The findings highlight the importance of understanding the interplay between extracellular and tissue ionic pools in euryhaline species.

Salt transport by the gill Na+-K+-2Cl- symporter in palaemonid shrimps: exploring physiological, molecular and evolutionary landscapes

Anieli Cristina Maraschi et al.

Summary: This study focused on the ion regulation capabilities of palaemonid shrimps in different salinity environments. Palaemonids exhibit hypo-regulation in high salinity and hyper-regulation in low salinity. The research revealed a positive correlation between the expression of gill NKCC protein and the hemolymph's hyper-osmoregulatory capacity, suggesting a role for NKCC in salt secretion.

Measuring enzyme activities in crude homogenates: Na+/K+-ATPase as a case study in optimizing assays

Christopher D. Moyes et al.

Summary: This review explores the choices made by researchers when assaying Na+/K+-ATPase (NKA) enzyme, and how these choices influence the understanding of its physiological regulation. Common pitfalls in different extraction and assay methods are identified, with experimental work demonstrating the impact of choices in detergents, salts, and substrates on NKA activities. The review integrates knowledge from enzymology, biomedical physiology, cell biology, and evolutionary biology to provide a more robust method for assaying the enzyme and identifies caveats and future directions for exploring its structure and function in comparative physiology.
