Characteristics and nutrient function of intestinal bacterial communities in black soldier fly (Hermetia illucens L.) larvae in livestock manure conversion

Yue Ao et al.

Summary: The study investigated the taxonomic structure and potential functions of intestinal bacterial communities in black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) during the conversion of chicken and swine manure. The results showed a significant decrease in Proteobacteria and increase in Bacteroidetes in the BSFL gut after being fed manure. Certain bacterial taxa in the BSFL gut have the ability to synthesize amino acids, contributing to the high-efficiency nutrient conversion associated with intestinal microbes.

Impact of Processed Food (Canteen and Oil Wastes) on the Development of Black Soldier Fly (Hermetia illucens) Larvae and Their Gut Microbiome Functions

Thomas Klammsteiner et al.

Summary: This study explores the feasibility of using black soldier fly larvae to process canteen food waste, showing that the larvae have a significantly higher consumption rate and waste reduction index compared to control chicken feed. However, the oil separator waste fraction inhibits larval biomass gain and can lead to high mortality rates.

Mechanistic insights into organic carbon-driven water blackening and odorization of urban rivers

Zhiwei Liang et al.

Summary: Rapid global urbanization is causing severe pollution of urban rivers through massive anthropogenic inputs of organic matter and inorganic nutrients, leading to changes in the structure and function of aquatic microbial communities. Organic carbon is identified as a key parameter driving water blackening and odorization, as well as the enrichment of emerging pathogens in urban river microbial communities. The study provides mechanistic insight into the phenomenon and raises questions about current remediation strategies for urban aquatic ecosystems.

A high-quality, chromosome-level genome assembly of the Black Soldier Fly (Hermetia illucens L.)

Tomas N. Generalovic et al.

Summary: The Black Soldier Fly is an important species for bioconversion of organic material into animal feed. A high-quality chromosome-scale genome assembly was generated using various sequencing technologies, revealing the chromosome structure and gene count of the Black Soldier Fly. Analysis on a lab population also provided insights into the genetic variation and inbreeding coefficient of the species.
