Pyrazine functionalization to boost the antenna effect in rare-earth metal-organic frameworks for tetracycline detection

Kun Wu et al.

Summary: This study presents a strategy for synthesizing rare-earth metal-organic frameworks (RE-MOFs) with 12-connected RE9 clusters and shp topology, and demonstrates the antenna effect of X-shaped tetracarboxylate linkers in sensitizing europium ions. The research shows that RE-MOFs constructed with a pyrazine-based linker exhibit significantly higher luminescence quantum yield and quenching sensitivity compared to those constructed with a benzene-based linker. The luminescence quenching mechanism is mainly attributed to the internal filtration effect (IFE). Additionally, a mixed matrix film of the RE-MOFs is applied for rapid and visual luminescence response to tetracycline molecules with good reusability.

Temperature-dependent chloride-mediated access to atom-precise silver thiolate nanoclusters

Ling Yang et al.

Summary: Two atom-precise silver nanoclusters were successfully obtained using a unique temperature-dependent, chloride-mediated approach. The number of chloride ions encapsulated inside the Ag-S shell could be regulated by the slow dissolution of almost insoluble KCl at various temperatures. This article provides a promising synthetic approach for controlling the number of Ag atoms that form a shell around the anionic core, in addition to offering a potential pathway for the introduction of other inorganic anions into silver clusters. More broadly, the synthetic strategy offers scope for generating new families of silver thiolate clusters of varying size and composition.

Flexible Vertex Engineers the Controlled Assembly of Distorted Supramolecular Tetrahedral and Octahedral Cages

Shu-Jin Bao et al.

Summary: In this study, a new method was proposed to design and construct unique cage assemblies using a flexible vertex with adjustable angles. Highly distorted tetrahedral and octahedral cages were selectively formed for the first time, with the flexible vertex formed from the synergistic effect of coordination and covalent interactions. The interligand angle of the vertex could be modulated by guest anions, allowing for the fine-tuning of different cage geometries. Reversible structural transformations between tetrahedral and octahedral cages were achieved through anion exchange, and the KBr-based cage thin films exhibited significantly enhanced third-order NLO responses.

Third-order nonlinear optical adjusting behavior in azobenzene metal complexes

Chang Xing et al.

Summary: The study successfully designed and synthesized two metal complexes third-order NLO switches, which show superior performance conversion, fast response, and versatility compared to congeneric optical switches. The third-order NLO properties were proven through tests to exhibit reverse saturable absorption and self-defocusing refraction, with the behavior quickly turning into self-focusing refraction after light irradiation. The influence of metal ions on NLO behavior and the origin of third-order NLO properties were investigated through various techniques, demonstrating the excellent fatigue resistance and broadened application range of these metal complexes as third-order NLO switches.

Designable Al32-Oxo Clusters with Hydrotalcite-like Structures: Snapshots of Boundary Hydrolysis and Optical Limiting

Ya-Jie Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the assembly of Al-III ions with pi-conjugated carboxylate ligands, and the hydrolysis and nonlinear optical properties of the resulting materials. Al-32-oxo clusters with hydrotalcite-like cores and pi-conjugated shells were isolated, showing significant reverse saturable absorption response. X-ray diffraction revealed boundary hydrolysis occurring at equatorially unsaturated coordination sites of Al-III ions, supporting the proposed boundary substitution mechanism.

Structural Variation and Switchable Nonlinear Optical Behavior of Metal-Organic Frameworks

Lin Zhang et al.

Summary: Two europium metal-organic frameworks, ZJU-23-Eu and ZJU-24-Eu, were selectively synthesized by adjusting solvent contents to modulate coordination modes. Their different spatial connectivity and symmetry result in varied fluorescence and second harmonic generation responses, with ZJU-23-Eu showing characteristic Eu3+ emission and ZJU-24-Eu exhibiting SHG response. These findings establish NLO models based on MOFs to design NLO devices with specific functionalities.

Kangshuai Geng et al.

Summary: This study reveals the significant influence of intramolecular group rotation on NLO performance for the first time, with the design and synthesis of two compounds used to demonstrate this effect. It was found that restricting group rotation can alter NLO performance, and photo-induced isomerization can also partially restrict group rotation.

Summary: The study introduces a nanoporous solid material that induces chirality and enantioselective enrichment through circularly polarized light. Based on a crystalline metal-organic framework, the material utilizes photoswitchable fluorinated azobenzenes to induce chirality through trans-to-cis photoisomerization. Experimental results demonstrate that CPL causes chiral photoresolution, resulting in an optically active material.

Disilane-bridged architectures with high optical transparency for optical limiting

Summary: A novel tetraphenylethylene (TPE) architecture utilizing a disilane bridge has been developed for the preparation of organic optical power limiting (OPL) materials with high transparency. The sigma-bridged TPE derivatives show enhanced solid-state emission efficiencies and intense nonlinear optics due to unique sigma-electron delocalization from the incorporated Si-Si bridge. These compounds exhibit favorable optical transparency in the visible region and poly(bisphenol A carbonate) (PBC) thin films of the disilane-bridged compounds demonstrate significant reverse saturable absorbance (RSA) responses during Z-scan measurements at 532 nm.
